Help support healthy, food-secure communities and a thriving regional food system this New Year!

We are already over a quarter of the way to 2018 fundraising goal of $20,000! Will you help us reach it? Click here to donate.

A donation to the Food & Health network goes a long way. Your support allows us to implement innovative programs and share resources with communities across South Central New York that improve health, increase food security, and create markets for local farms. We have big plans for 2018! Check out some of the projects we are excited to work on over the following year:

  • Expansion of New York Thursday, an all NYS farm to school lunch program in Broome & Tioga School Districts
  • New farm to school partnerships in Delaware, Otsego & Chenango Counties

Growing Farm to School

We are excited to be a partner on round three of the New York State Farm to School Grants Program! Our partners at Broome-Tioga BOCES were awarded a grant that will allow us to add 5 more school districts to the successful New York Thursday Farm to School program! This project builds on several years of collaboration with Broome-Tioga BOCES Food Service and the launch of last year's first New York Thursday Farm to School Program in Upstate New York. Our partnership will expand New York Thursday's to Binghamton City School District, Deposit Central School District, Newark Valley Central School District, Susquehanna Valley Central School District, and Windsor Central School District.

We additionally look forward to expanding our farm to school efforts in Chenango, Delaware, and Otsego Counties! Sidney Central School District, in partnership with DCMO BOCES, also received a grant to expand their successful programming and connect farmers and fresh local produce to Afton, Bainbridge, Walton, Downsville, Unatego, Unadilla Valley, Sherburne-Earlville, Greene, and Oneonta City school districts. A very big thank you to all partners, and to New York State and our representatives for investing in farm to school!

Happy New Year! The cold can’t stop NY Thursday in 2018! January’s local menu features a sloppy-joe with home-grown roasted potatoes and fresh-cut roasted beets and carrots. We are so grateful to our farm partners Headwater Food Hub, Cascun Farms, and Main Street Farms for their delicious products and dedication to farm-to-school in South Central NY. A special thank you also goes out to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, whose partnership has made the transportation of our farm-to-school products a viable reality!

Farm to School Resources:

New Resource: Demonstrating the Impact of Farm to Institution Through Metrics: Measuring Up is a six-part blog series from Farm to Institution New England. It provides a snapshot of the farm to institution landscape in New England. This series draws from two years of work by the FINE metrics team, presenting key indicators for farm to institution success. Each blog post delves into a few key indicators and gives you links for diving deeper. Read the full series here.

Thank you Crooked Carrot, Cascun Farms, Main Street Farms, Russell Farms, Headwater Food Hub, and Byrne Dairy for helping to make our December NY Thursday menu a success!
The December NY Thursday menu included southwest chicken chili, harvest apple kale salad, pears, and low fat milk all sourced from New York State farms!
Tom Lewis, our Food Access & Development Coordinator, and Christian DiRado-Owens, our Program Coordinator traveled to Boston, MA last month for the Community Food Systems Conference hosted by New Entry Sustainable Farming Project. Here are Tom's reflections from his time there:

UC Davis’ Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program defines a sustainable community food system as “a collaborative network that integrates sustainable food production, processing, distribution, consumption and waste management in order to enhance the environmental, economic and social health of a particular place.” During my time as an AmeriCorps VISTA with the Food & Health Network, I’ve had the chance to learn about and also see first-hand how valuable community food systems are to creating equitable community development. So, when I was given the opportunity to travel to Boston for the
2017 Community Food Systems Conference, I was understandably excited. The conference, hosted by the New Entry Sustainable Farming Project, took place in the historic Boston Park Plaza Hotel. The conference was three days long and filled with workshops, a panel moderated by Big Hunger author and former director of the Community Food Security Coalition Andy Fisher, many beneficial networking opportunities, and a keynote address by the highly influential First Nations environmentalist, economist, activist, and writer Winona LaDuke.

No Student Goes Hungry Program: Governor Cuomo unveiled plans for a comprehensive approach to providing students of all ages, backgrounds and financial situations access to healthy, locally-sourced meals from kindergarten through college during his 2018 State of the State Address. The Governor's No Student Goes Hungry Program includes investments to expand the Farm to School program, legislation to expand access to free breakfast and put an end to lunch shaming, and policy changes to ensure students in kindergarten through college receive access to farm-fresh foods in a quality learning environment. Read about the full proposal here.

From NOFA-NY: The Organic Certification Cost-Share Program is at Risk! The Organic Certification Cost-Share program helps organic farms stay in business and is especially important for small and mid-size farms. We need to support local, organic farms and our regional economies. Without adequate support, we will become increasingly reliant on imports for organic food.

Congress is working on the Farm Bill now, and we have learned that Organic Certification Cost-Share programs could be cut if we do not take action. Call Your Senators and Representative TODAY! Call the Capitol Switchboard:
