For local governments, schools and universities, state agencies, and parks and recreation special districts: The Regional Air Quality Council is requesting applications to fund the purchase of low emission, commercial-grade, lawn and garden equipment. Learn More.
The fine print, for those who are curious about why such a program exists... The Denver Metro/North Front Range is part of a 9-county area that does not meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) national standard (NAAQS) for ozone. As a non-attainment area, the region is working to implement various planning measures to reduce emissions and bring ozone down. Commercial Lawn & Garden Equipment operating in the area presents a great opportunity to reduce harmful ozone-causing pollutants during the summer ozone months.

On Friday, February 9, Smart Commute will celebrate International Winter Bike to Work Day along with the entire Denver metro.
For our residents and commuters, Colorado's famous sunny days make it easy to bike to work throughout the year. For winter bicyclists, there are some breakfast stations planned to help you celebrate - three so far, and still growing!

Welcoming your new neighbor? So is Smart Commute. In the next month, Smart Commute will be partnering with the Regional Air Quality Council on a limited campaign to welcome newcomers to the north metro. We'll be reminding our new neighbors to preserve the Colorado lifestyle by choosing to
walk, bike, carpool and ride transit.

Do you go the extra mile (wink!) to walk, bike, carpool, vanpool, or ride transit to get to work? The Denver Regional Council of Governments is looking for "Way to Go Champions" for this year's Metro Vision award ceremony. Individuals can be nominated in one of three categories, and there is also an "employer" category for employers who support commuters with cutting-edge workplace programs.
- Commuter of the Year Champion Award – Recognizes an individual who exemplifies exceptional commuting practices year-round.
- Workplace Champion Award – Recognizes an outstanding employee for going above and beyond expectations to promote and achieve employee participation in non-SOV commute options.
- Community Champion Award – Recognizes an individual who demonstrates a commitment to promoting or advocating for transportation options in the workplace, school or the community beyond regular work duties.
If you fit the bill, or you know someone else who does, nominations are open until January 31, and can be submitted online.

RTD's renovated Civic Center Station opened in December, returning bus connections near the Capitol to a central location. The improvements made to the waiting area and bus flow were well received, and you can see photos of the renovations on the Denver Streetsblog website.
Route 122x riders will catch the bus at the gate closest to Colfax and Lincoln, Gate 9.

If you regularly make "New Years Resolutions," then we here at Smart Commute wanted to remind you that changing a commuting habit often accomplishes your goals - whether it's a personal fitness goal, an environmental goal, or a financial goal.
Health - Of course incorporating walking or biking into your commute will increase your personal fitness levels, no one can argue against it - but, a 2014 study in the British Medical Journal found that people who rode transit had a lower BMI than solo-drivers of the same ages and sex.
Environment - For every mile you drive in an average vehicle, your tailpipe emits 359 grams of carbon dioxide. While by itself, that is a minuscule number, if you extrapolate it over a year, a 10-mile commute emits 1.9 tons of CO2 (it takes 79 trees to re-absorb that much CO2 in a year).
Financial - Driving costs money, and the less driving you can do in a year, the better. The AAA calculated the average annual cost of operating a vehicle at $8,469 in 2017. Switching to carpooling can cut your costs in half for each trip taken, and switching to active or mass transportation results in even greater savings.
Interested in making a change? Even one day a week helps - check out our website for a list of things to consider when reviewing what commute option might work best for you. We are happy to help answer your questions; email us today.
