Lakewood Police create
Family Crime Team

The Lakewood Police Department now has a Family Crimes Team to specialize in cases involving elder abuse, domestic violence abuse and sex assault.

The team was created to address one of the trends affecting law enforcement agencies across the country, and a focus has developed on family crimes and the impact they have on victims and the community. The team consists of one sergeant, one investigation technician and seven detectives. The team will work closely with Jefferson County Adult Protective Services, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office, the Lakewood City Attorney’s Office and Lakewood’s Victim Advocates Unit.

The Family Crimes Team will also have a role in developing the Jefferson County Family Justice Center. Family Justice Centers are being developed across the country to assist victims and provide them more accessible services. Read about the Police Department’s role in efforts to create a center in Jefferson County at Lakewood.org/GoodStories.

Business Plan 101
Starting a business without writing a business plan is like driving from Denver to New York without a map. You may get there, eventually, but how much time and money will you waste and what will you miss along the way? Let the Jefferson County Business Resource Center help guide you with the free Business Plan 101 seminar, 5:30-7 p.m. Jan. 11. It will cover how your plan can be used as a feasibility plan, loan proposal and operating guide for your new or existing business. To register, visit JeffcoBRC.org

Your child can be a star
Continuing a 29-year tradition of bringing theater education to school-aged children, Missoula Children’s Theatre is holding auditions for its upcoming production of “Gulliver's Travels” at Lakewood Cultural Center on Jan. 22. The auditions are open to children in grades kindergarten through 12th.  View full audition and rehearsal information at Lakewood.org/MCTAuditions.

Sign up for Teen Court
Lakewood’s Teen Court is looking for new volunteers for this upcoming school semester. Teen Court is an educational tool for youth that enables them to actively participate in the justice system by acting as defense attorneys, prosecutors, bailiffs and jury members. This is an opportunity for students to participate in actual cases with real sentences from the teen jury for the juvenile offender. The program builds confidence in public speaking and other skills and is available to those ages 13-18. For more information, contact Rachel Starry with Lakewood’s Probation Division at 303-987-7413 or racsta@lakewoodco.org.

Variance application
The City has received an application for a minor variance from the minimum rear yard setback requirement for a proposed storage shed at 5340 W. Colorado Ave. If approved, the variance would allow for the detached accessory structure to be located four feet from the property line. For more information, please contact Kara Mueller, project planner, at 303-987-7982 or karmue@lakewood.org.

Nighttime construction
The City will allow construction to occur at nighttime for the following projects:
  • A gas service cutoff requiring excavation and the replacement of concrete roadway panels in the northbound and southbound inside lanes of Wadsworth Boulevard at West Ninth Avenue. The work is scheduled for Jan. 11.
  • Installing a gas main in Wadsworth Boulevard at West 13th Avenue. The work is scheduled to start on Jan. 9 and end March 30.
  • Digging for existing utilities at Wadsworth Boulevard and Byers Avenue. The work is scheduled to start Jan. 8 and end Jan. 12.
