Today in NHL history: Jan. 19, 1996 – The NHL Board of Governors approved the sale of the Winnipeg Jets and the franchise's move to Phoenix for the 1996-97 season. Fifteen years later, Winnipeg got an NHL team back for the 2011-12 season as a result of the sale of the Atlanta Thrashers, which became the second incarnation of the Jets.
