Welcome to 2018! 

We thought we'd start off 2018 by exploring what attracts people to volunteer with us. Meet Hannah (great name!) a volunteer, based in Leeds. Here, she shares why she chose to volunteer with us...

Q - What attracted you to apply for a position at Mini Mermaids?

Good for the soul:
I felt I needed to put back into the world and do some good.  Searching, I came across Mini Mermaids and after reading about the work you do,  your values and ethos, I felt this is for me

Professionally:
I am a Nurse and Health Visitor and I have a passion to help people, especially young people. I work in the inner city which is largely a socially deprived area of Leeds. Part of my role is building the confidence of parents and building the motivation for change.

But most importantly what attracted me to apply for a voluntary position at Mini Mermaids and Young Tritons is…

Personally:
Aged 10 years I lost my dad unexpectedly which followed a very troubled relationship with my mum.

Alone, overweight, shy and under confident I hid in my shell. It wasn’t until I reached my teenage years I found the love of moving my body to quieten my mind, manage my overwhelming feelings and lose the unhealthy relationship with food. I found my inner strength, resilience and my confidence. I had found a positive coping mechanism which truly helped me blossom into the person I am today, and I did it on my own.

But that’s it;
I don’t think any young person should have to do this on their own. They are our next generation. It’s important we support them into finding their inner strength, self-worth, and confidence, to be brave and to be resilient to reach their full potential in life. For them to develop an attitude of ‘I can’.
