Propelling Biking Further, Faster Will Need Your Input

Safe streets for all is attainable, and we’re on a mission to advance equitable and inclusive mobility outcomes in Atlanta. We know working together gets us further, and your feedback on the community survey will guide our decision on a potential new strategic direction to put bikes on equal footing with other transportation options.

Starting today, July 15 through Wednesday, July 31, we want to hear from you, here are three ways to support:

  1. Complete the community survey today! Heads up, it’ll take approximately seven minutes.

  2. Share the community survey with your friends, family, and neighbors—encourage them to participate in shaping our programs and advocacy.

  3. Be a mobility advocate at work! Ask your employer to share the community survey company-wide.

Baker Street Update

After passing the Atlanta City Council on July 1 with a vote of 11-4, Mayor Bottoms vetoed the legislation to convert Baker Street back into a two-way street between Centennial Olympic Park Drive N.W. and Piedmont Avenue N.E. Renew Atlanta General Manager Josh Rowan expressed the project isn't dead. The City Council now has an opportunity to override Mayor Bottoms' veto with a minimum of ten votes.

Show your support for the conversion, sign the petition to change Baker Street back into a two-way city street.

People Who Bikes + People Who Drive Have a New Ticket Diversion Program

We’re excited to deliver on another 2017 strategic plan promise resulting from a two-year collaboration with the City of Atlanta and the City Solicitor’s Office. The new ticket diversion program launches Wednesday, July 24, from  6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at the Jury Assembly Room of the Superior Court of Fulton County. People who are ticketed for first time bike-related citations while biking or driving, and complete the course, are given amnesty from the financial penalty.

The class is free through support from the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. Sign-up here

It's Time for Protected Bike Lanes + Speed Reduction in Kirkwood

On June 29, David and Valerie Warren were on an afternoon bike commute in an unprotected bike lane on Hosea Williams Drive when a person in a black Hyundai Accent struck the couple and left the scene. David was physically unharmed, but Valerie suffered a broken collarbone, ribs, right thumb, and also has a small subdural hematoma-a collection of blood outside the brain-six staples and a contusion on her lung.

Community members in the Kirkwood neighborhood have expressed concerns about the dangers of speeding vehicles on Hosea Williams Drive, and requested protected bike lanes. Councilmember Archibong recently initiated a traffic study, expected to be complete in September. We're calling on the city to show their commitment to safety by installing protected barriers for people on bikes and reducing the speed limit for vehicles on Hosea Williams Drive.

Valerie and David's lives are forever changed, and #SafeStreetsForAll is the only way to eliminate horrific incidents like theirs. They need the community's help identifying the person behind the wheel of the car at the time of the collision. If you have any information, contact us for next steps.
