Kia Ora Koutou
I feel very privileged to be writing this newsletter as your new Tumuaki of Coromandel Area School.  Over the past few weeks I have been warmly welcomed by staff, students and whanau and I would like to thank you all for helping make this an easy transition for my family and I.  I am married to David Hopoi, who is a Police Offier in Thames, and we have three children, Carter, Cole and Qwyn.  I understand the students have also met our cat Rudi - who once again has made my place of work, her second home.

For the past seven years, we have called Onewhero home, as I was the Deputy Principal of Onewhero Area School, which my sons attended.  The area school model is close to my heart and I could not see myself teaching or leading in any other type of school.  There is something very special about being able to be a part of a child's entire educational journey from Year 1 to Year 13, and having a helping hand in developing such well-rounded and respectful citizens of the world.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Murray McDonald for his leadership and contribution to this school over the last couple of years.  I would also like to thank Ms Joan Hart for the amazing job she did as Acting Principal.  She has a tireless work ethic and a deep love for the students of this school, which we are grateful for.  I am looking forward to working with Ms Hart and the other members of our Senior Leadership Team, Ms Victoria Field and Mrs Vicki Rouse, to build on the great work that has been started.

I recently addressed the students and staff and I made three promises to them:
1.  Every action and decision I make will be with the best interests of the students at heart.
2.  I will always have an open door policy into my office.
3.  To listen and comunicate in a transparent and honest manner.
I would like the school community to keep me honest with these promises, and remind me of them, should they think I am not fulfilling them.

Coromandel Area School has the potential to be the 'school of choice' in this area from Year 1 right through to Year 13, for all of our akonga.  I hope to continue to improve upon the good work done before me in getting this school to where it is now, and realise the potential we have.

There are no limits to what we can learn and achieve together, and I challenge you to join me in helping Coromandel Area School always be 'better than the day before'.

Absences from School:
As parents, you have a vital role in ensuring that your child attends school whenever it is open unless there is a good reason for his / her absence.  Acceptable reasons for absence include sickness or serious family circumstances such as bereavement.  If your child is going to be absent from school, can you please ring or email the reception office (07 866 8893 or office@coroarea.school.nz) of the reason (this is very important).

Continual Lateness to School:
It is important that your child be at school on time and attend morning class.  Students arriving late to class disrupt the learning of other students.  It is also important that they attend monring classes so that morning notices are received and the students are aware of what is going on during the school day.  Your support in ensuring that your child understands the importance of being at school on time would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Reminder about Medications:
If your child is asthmatic or is allergic to something, e.g. bee stings, and needs medication held in the Sick Bay, can you please ensure that the medication held for them at school in Sick Bay is up to date and is secured  in a named bag.  Thank  you.

Police Vetting Application:
This notice is for any parent, caregiver or whanau member who thinks that they may like to be involved in any school trip / camp this year, or be involved with in-class activities supporting the teacher.  As a legal requirement we must police vet any person over the age of 16 years, who wants to do any of the above.  We would really appreicate you being proactive by filling in the attached police vetting application and dropping it back to the School Office, with a form of photo ID. This way, we can get all the paperwork out of the way, and let you get on with the job of supporting your tamariki.  This application will cover you for the next three years.

Library Help, Help, Help:
Yvette, our school library manager, would absolutely love some volunteer helpers to bind the new books, help sort books / magazines, process onto our system any new items, check shelving accuracy, etc, etc ...  If you can spare an hour or two, she would love to see you.  Just come to the office, ask for Yvette and we will get you to the library pronto.

Pet Day Committee 2018:
We are looking for four people to come and join myself and Nadine on the Pet Day Committee 2018.  If you have some spare time and would love to get this up and running, please contact me on 866 8893, extn 211, or email me:  y_storey@coroarea.school.nz
Thanks Yvette

Year 11-13 Distance Learning Information
Many of our students are currently enrolled in distance learning (DL) courses with alternative providers. Volcanics provides students with a virtual face to face lesson every week and attendance at these sessions is compulsory for all VC enrolled students. We ask that if a student is absent on the day of their VC (Volcanics) lesson, they notify their VC teacher by email. Volcanics can also allow students to telephone into the lesson from home for free from a landline telephone. 0800 693 638 – students can then enter their password and PIN number. Volcanics classes start on the week beginning 12th February.
Students who are enrolled with Te Kura are able to access their course materials from any location with an internet connection and computer. Students are able to telephone or email their teacher in order to ask questions or ask for support.

Students and caregivers are able to talk with Ms Field at any time regarding distance learning courses feel free to make contact by telephoning the school office or emailing v_field@coroarea.school.nz.

Without a struggle, there can be no progress.
Learn to embrace challenges because they are a gift in life and not a difficulty to be avoided.
