Family Life Intensive Training
We had lunch with Victor and Paty today. Roger translated for a team member Dave Sunde, helping the conversation along. How did Victor and Paty come to join us for this training event? Victor solemnly began their story:
"My wife is one of 12 children. Her brother came home from the US with a big box. All of the siblings were seated around the table for dinner. He began to tell the family that something had happened to him. He had given his life to the Lord. He opened the box and gave a Bible to each of his siblings and parents."
Victor didn't tell us any of their reactions, only that the brother was a brave man. He told his wife Paty in private that her brother was crazy, a fanatic.
Victor and Paty married, and within a few years Paty was persuaded to believe also, as her mother and sister had apparently become fanatics too. Paty began attending church with their baby girl and Victor felt lonely every Sunday morning. (Apparently Paty didn't say a word to convince him of anything, recognizing that the work that had to be done was not hers.) Victor started attending worship and was drawn to what he heard, but thought those people raising their hands and crying were over the top, and he wondered what was wrong with them. In measured tones Victor said that soon he was the one raising his hands with tears streaming down his face. Victor read his Bible a lot but only understood a few verses. He said, "It was enough! Those verses transformed me."
This sweet couple began their life in Christ together. Paty's eyes welled with tears recounting a couple who had spent time with them, modeling to them what a Christian marriage is. "We didn't know anything and they let us watch them and learn."
They just want to do what someone else had done for them. What a privilege to hear their story!
