Wisconsin Aquaculture Conference 2018: Collaborative Efforts
The Wisconsin Aquaculture Association has collaborated with the UWSP NADF to offer this year's Wisconsin Aquaculture Conference in Marshfield on March 2nd and 3rd, 2018. The conference will pull in surrounding states including Minnesota and Michigan to discuss industry updates and state priorities. The idea to incorporate surrounding states suggests the potential for future collaboration and growth as Midwest aquaculture is taking great strides and advances with companies such as Superior Fresh (Northfield, WI) and Urban Organics (St. Paul, MN).
The WAA conference will include topics such as industry updates, hatchery design, aquaponics, fish health and biosecurity, training opportunities, marketing and labelling, expert panel and also includes an industry tradeshow, lunch and cooking demonstration. This conference is a great way to connect with the industry and learn about new systems, techniques and best management practices. Learn more information or register here...

Aquaculture Education
Wisconsin Science Fest was hosted in the northern part of the state by Bayfield High School this last fall. During four days each fall, hundreds of venues around Wisconsin participate in the Wisconsin Science Festival, a statewide celebration that connects people with science, technology, engineering, art and math. UWSP NADF joined Bayfield school to engage students in aquaculture, letting students put their hands in a bowl of fish eggs, look into a tank of walleyes (photo at right) and learn what a sea lamprey feels like! (photo above). Sea lampreys are being used in a project at UWSP NADF to better understand the sub-lethal effects of their parasitism on lake trout populations.
UWSP NADF recently donated over 300 extended walleye fingerlings to schools across Wisconsin for their aquaculture or aquaponics systems. Besides local schools to the facility which includes Ashland, Washburn and Bayfield districts, UWSP NADF donated fish to Winneconne, Bay Port and Freedom high schools. These walleye are surplus from an ongoing project at the facility and have been pellet trained using intensive techniques and practices in the facility's walleye larval system. These schools have the unique ability to raise pellet trained walleye in their system due to these fish not being available for purchase anywhere in the state.
