JOB ANNOUNCEMENT LETTER
Microbiologist Technician I
The Mosquito Abatement District-Davis is announcing a full time position as a Microbiologist
Technician in their lab. This position will have full health insurance, dental insurance, vacation,
and participation in the Utah State Retirement Tier II system. The starting salary for this
position $18.45 per hour.
This microbiologist I will be working as a bench technologist in the laboratory performing RNA
extractions and real-time PCR on mosquito pools, looking for West Nile, St. Louis Encephalitis and
Western Equine Encephalitis viruses. Under general direction of the manager, the microbiologist
will need to plan, organize and direct all lab operations, mosquito surveillance and mosquito
processing for testing purposes; supervise employees engaged in mosquito surveillance operations
and do related work as required.

MICROBIOLOGIST TECHNICIAN I JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Description:
This microbiologist I will be working as a bench technologist in the laboratory performing RNA extractions and real-time PCR on mosquito pools, looking for West Nile, St. Louis Encephalitis and Western Equine Encephalitis viruses. The microbiologist uses standard microbiological tests or examinations which require judgment and skill in familiar or repetitive types of samples. The microbiologist troubleshoots instruments and methods to achieve correct testing and prepares standard solutions and reagents for analysis.
Under general direction of the manager, the microbiologist will need to plan, organize and direct all lab operations, mosquito surveillance and mosquito processing for testing purposes; supervise employees engaged in mosquito surveillance operations and do related work as required. Maintain and operate any and all of the lab equipment and surveillance equipment or direct such maintenance and/or operation. Make investigations and inspections as may be required to determine both the needs and the effectiveness of trapping and surveillance operations.
Characteristics:
Should have a wide knowledge of lab technique, procedures and lab organization. Be able to use logic to analyze or identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts associated with information or data to draw conclusions. Be able to enter, transcribe, record, store, or maintain information in both written and electronic form. Evaluate information against a set of standards and use scientific instruments and equipment to make a decision or solve a problem by using logic to identify key facts, explore alternatives, and propose quality solutions. Use laboratory techniques, safety practices, principles, theories, and practices of microbiology to propose mosquito control actions. Must review and/or edit documents for accuracy and completeness. Will compose and produce reports, documents, analyze operating records and related material and communicate information and ideas clearly, and concisely, in writing; read and understand information presented in writing. Will gain a thorough knowledge of state and federal regulations and requirements dealing PCR arbovirus testing and results. Will gain a general knowledge of mosquito ecology, biology, and identification. Must have the ability to organize and supervise a comprehensive surveillance program and mosquito testing operations; develop operating procedures and instruction materials; supervise the work of others; work effectively and cooperatively with superiors, subordinates, or other employees, and the public; and evaluate situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
Examples of Duties:
1. Administers/conducts tests or examinations and/or evaluates results.
2. Analyze and test items. Interpret results and/or implement changes.
3. Interprets, clarifies, explains and applies agency policy and procedures, business practices, federal or state laws and regulations, etc.
4. Maintains technical data, generates reports and findings and defends analytical work during hearings or litigation.
5. Reviews data, records and files for detail and accuracy. Maintains accurate records and logs. Reviews and/or inspects work for quality, accuracy, and completeness.
6. Prepares specimens for laboratory analysis by preparing media, solutions, and reagents, etc.; stains slides and smears, performs animal dissections if needed or other technical laboratory procedures.
7. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and/or state laws, regulations, and/or agency rules, standards and guidelines, etc.
8. Provides technical assistance on agency issues, services, program(s), and/or computer hardware and software, etc.
9. Develops or modifies rules, policies, or standards, etc.
10. Instructs and supervises all lab testing and coordinating of adult mosquito surveillance operations.
11. Plans and organizes lab testing and surveillance operations in conformance with and to achieve the program objectives, methods and findings determined by the manager.
12. Coordinates the identification and cataloging of mosquito trap collections.
13. Collects blood samples from encephalitis surveillance chicken flock if in use.
14. Assist with Public Education Program in teaching classes for the District in Davis County schools. Assist in developing and improving the Public Education program and implementing the program.
15. Assist in public relations resulting from lab test results and surveillance operations; calls on property owners and others concerned and explains the Districts program and solicits property owners’ cooperation in vector control.
16. Based on lab results and surveillance data; will work with staff to Coordinate air and ground spray operations.
17. Will participate in reviews and evaluates effectiveness of air spray operations and takes appropriate action as indicated.
18. Will participate in “On Call” supervision of nightly ULV ground operations.
19. Plans and carries out the safety program for lab operations of the District, including tutoring and on the job training of employees in different techniques and equipment usage.
20. Coordinates lab operations with supportive services, such as, equipment maintenance and repair, personnel leave time and availability of temporary personnel.
Minimum Qualifications:
Must be physically able and willing to do physical labor; motivated to project an excellent impression on subordinates; have a valid Utah Drivers license, have or be able to obtain a non-commercial pesticide applicators license from the State of Utah Department of Agriculture within 6 weeks of hire; have an equivalent to a high school education; formal training (university type classroom setting) in microbiology or medical technology; coursework covering microbiology, mathematics, statistics, biological sciences and chemistry; internship program as microbiologist technologist. Current knowledge of laboratory procedures and equipment expected. Previous laboratory experience is recommended. At least one year of experience is preferred, but graduates are encouraged to apply. Experience with Laboratory Information System is beneficial.
Preferred Qualifications:
Associate Degree/Bachelor Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Biological Sciences/Microbiology. One year of related microbiology experience or equivalent combination of education and work experience. License / Certification or eligibility for certification by a nationally recognized certifying agency. Experience with aseptic technique, general microbiological principles (DNA/RNA extraction/RT-PCR/ electrophoresis), and bacterial/virus handling (non-pathogenic or pathogenic). Experience with advanced molecular biology/microbiology techniques (primer design/sequencing analysis) is preferred.

Description
  • Perform daily testing of raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products
  • Perform assigned duties in the Quality Control Labs in an accurate manner and documents all results
  • Perform duties in accordance with current Good Laboratory Practices (cGLP)/Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) policies and requirements
  • Follow all relevant Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and policies set forth by Young Living
  • Write, edit, and/or review standard operating procedures (SOPs), Standard Test Methods (STMs), and equipment qualifications
  • Perform method validations
  • Train personnel
  • Identify organisms detected in testing through gram stain and other methods
  • Proficient in microbiology lab equipment such as microscope, incubators, and others

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Execute all lab methods per Good Laboratory Practices to test raw materials, in-process samples and finished goods for dietary supplement, foods and personal care products
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the lab, as well as other routine laboratory tasks
  • Perform other microbial tests, including challenge testing to determine preservative efficacy, environmental monitoring, and probiotic testing
  • Perform maintenance, verification, calibrations, and monitoring of laboratory instruments
  • Aseptically sample products for microbial testing; determine levels of microorganisms and ensure all products are free of harmful pathogens
  • Identify microorganisms by microscopic examination of physiological, morphological, and cultural characteristics
  • Prepare media and other solutions for microbiological testing
  • Report test results and processes to ensure conformance to laboratory and document/record control procedures
  • Log lab samples, approve out-of-specification (OOS) results, and create Certificates of Analysis (C of As)
  • Order supplies and maintain chemical inventory
  • Write and update simple instrument SOPs and test methods
  • Familiar with official methods for microbial testing, including AOAC, USP, BAM, and others
  • Proficient in Rapid Micro Identification
  • Perform instrument qualifications
  • Familiar with pathogen verification/identification methods

Education and Experience

The Microbiology Department will be accepting applications for the Dr. John and Mrs. Nancy Lowe Microbiology Undergraduate Research Fellowship in February.  The application will be available for pickup in the Microbiology Department (TY450) on February  7, 2018.
