The Housing + Economic Opportunity summit we're hosting with the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas on February 9th at the AT&T Conference Center is just a few weeks away. We're excited about learning various ways we can create economic mobility for lower-income families and individuals, and brainstorming new initiatives and partnerships.

Clearly, a key to creating more economic opportunities for low-income people lies in higher education. But, college classes, books and fees can be quite expensive. And there are other barriers, like the cost of transportation and child care. Fortunately, there are organizations and agencies that can help. In this newsletter, we're featuring the story of Brittany Moore, a single mother who has realized her dream of becoming a nurse with help from Capital Idea. Unfortunately the funding for these programs is limited.

In one of the summit's breakout sessions, representatives of Texas Workforce Commission, Austin Community College and the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce will discuss why better educating our workforce for the current job market is a great investment and offers a broad range of benefits for a city's economy.

If you haven't registered for the summit, please do so soon on EVENTBRITE. Many thanks to our presenting sponsor JP Morgan Chase and Co. and all the other sponsors. We look forward to see you on February 9th!

BREAKOUT SESSION TO EXPLORE EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE TRAINING AS A BOOST TO REGIONAL SALARIES AND ECONOMY

On average, college educated individuals have higher earnings and greater contributions to the local economy over their lifetimes. But, socioeconomic barriers stand between many workers and the careers they aspire to. This session will focus on affordable educational and workforce development programs focused on local needs that can help connect employees to stable jobs and provide greater economic opportunities. BRITTANY'S STORY
VIDEO FEATURE - HEALTHCARE HAND-UP - BRITTANY'S STORY

Brittany Moore is living proof that programs that help pay for higher education and job training are a great investment. At the age of 23, Brittany was raising her two young daughters as a single mother. She was working full time as a medical assistant, but because of low wages and high living expenses, her dream of becoming a nurse seemed unlikely. In this video feature, find out how Capital Idea, LifeWorks and Workforce Solutions worked together to give Brittany the healthcare hand-up she needed. Click here to watch it on our website.
