Sites added to the Inventory of Evaluated Historic Resources

The following sites were evaluated or re-evaluated for addition to the Inventory of Evaluated Historic Resources in December and approved by the CHA at the January board meeting.

Hudson’s Bay Warehouse (1913) – 535 10 AV SW (Beltline)
Re-evaluated as a City Wide Historic Resource (CWHR)
This warehouse, built in 1913 to support a new state-of-the-art department store, exemplifies the significant investment of a national company in Calgary, recognizing and bolstering the city’s position as the region’s main commercial centre. [Activity value: City Wide significance] The building is a good example of a functional commercial warehouse, with classical elements (engaged pilasters, moulded overhanging cornice) adding some elegance to an otherwise plain structure. [Style value: Community significance]It contributed to the development of the northern Beltline area as Calgary's main wholesale/warehouse district, and continues to contribute to the warehouse district's historic identity and character. [Symbolic value: Community significance]

J.H. Ashdown Warehouse (1909) – 240 11 AV SW (Beltline)
Re-evaluated as a City Wide Historic Resource (CWHR)
Its contribution to Calgary's historic wholesale/warehouse district recalls Calgary's historic status as the most important wholesale and distribution centre between Winnipeg and Vancouver. [Activity value: City Wide significance] The building exemplifies the entrance of successful businesses from elsewhere into Calgary to capitalize on the city’s burgeoning market [Activity value: City Wide significance] It contributed to the development of the northern Beltline area as Calgary's main wholesale/warehouse district, and continues to contribute to the warehouse district's historic identity and character. [Symbolic value: Community significance] This is an excellent and rare surviving Calgary example of a Romanesque Revival warehouse, demonstrating the style’s key features: a massive appearance and openings contained in Roman arches. [Style value: City Wide significance.] The building’s prominent painted signage from its days as Lewis Stationery makes it a local landmark. [Landmark value: Community significance]

Norman and Jo Ann Stewart Residence (1977) – 2616 26 ST SW (Killarney/Glengarry)
Evaluated as a City Wide Historic Resource (CWHR)
It is an important work by Calgary-based residential designer Wolfgang H. Wenzel (1936–2012), who specialized in custom-designed, site-specific, energy-efficient homes, working throughout Alberta and British Columbia, especially in Calgary and Springbank. [Person Value: City Wide] This house’s novel Expressionist form draws on principles of organic architecture nestling into its setting through its low massing, overhanging roof, and choice of materials, with a spare, airy, open-plan interior with vaulted ceiling. [Style Value: City Wide] The house is notable for its unique design that prioritizes energy saving, dispersal of natural light, simplicity of forms and materials, and sense of spaciousness and efficient use of space in a small building [Design Value: City Wide] The earth berm construction, which puts most of the living areas partially below ground level for natural insulation, was innovative in Alberta and is still rare. [Construction Value: City Wide]
