This Weekend...

From the director, David Mitchell '87

“Inherit The Wind” was written during the McCarthy trials on Communism. The playwrights used a fictionalized version of the famous “Scopes Monkey Trial” on Evolution versus Creationism as a modern-day allegory, to speak out against the government trying to legislate what we, as individuals, can or can’t believe.

Aside from the obvious subjects of Evolution versus Creationism (versus Intelligent Design), Religion versus Science, and the Historical context of both the McCarthy Trials (Red Scare), and the real Scopes Monkey TrIal, “Inherit The Wind” offers many layers of topics that are relevant to our society today.

Mob mentality, celebrities and politicians on pedestals, blind faith, government legislation of our liberties, hate groups, “anti” groups, “pro” groups, censorship, education, free thought, free press, and free speech are all subjects that can be gleaned from this one 63 year old play.

In our current society, where some believe that those who can yell the loudest will silence their opponent, I can’t think of a more relevant subject for today.
The Cure for Cabin Fever!

Reservations are filling up fast for the best February beach party in town!  The Laker Legends Scholarship Gala Beach Bash is February 3 at the Ambassador.  Key West Express is providing the dance music.  Sundresses and flowered shirts are appropriate, or wear what you would to a cocktail party.

This is a great chance to break out of the winter doldrums and have a blast!  We are hearing from a lot of MPS alumni, current and past families, and other friends and neighbors.

You will have a chance to win fantastic prizes.  Not one but two sunset bay cruises are up for auction, as well as a chauffeured limousine night on the town.  And it wouldn’t be a beach party without the chance to win a week at a beautiful five bedroom house right on Bonita Beach, Florida. It’s a good idea to plan ahead with your tablemates to bid on some of these prize packages that accommodate larger groups.  Kevin Wheeler is the auctioneer.  If you haven’t seen him in action, you are in for a treat.

We will also be honoring this year’s Laker Legends, who include Bill Bengel, Joe Boesch, DDS ’78, and Sr. Joan McCabe, RSM ’51, Ken Regenor ’81 and the law firm of MacDonald Illig Jones & Britton.

True to the name, the Laker Legends Scholarship Gala is the biggest fundraiser of the year to raise scholarship dollars for deserving students.  A “Scholarship Auction” is one of the evening’s highlights.

Please check out mpslakers.com/gala for more information and reservations, or contact Karen at kgroshek@mpslakers.com.  If you can’t make it to the Gala, you can still take a chance online to win a beautiful Dahlkemper’s Jewelry Connection diamond necklace.

Gather your table and join us at the Laker Legends Scholarship Gala Beach Bash, the sure cure for cabin fever!

Notes from Fr. Steve

On Twitter

After years of wanting nothing to do with social media, the Holy Spirit has moved me to start tweeting. Who’d have thought! My plan is to daily tweet something Christ-centered, and to particularly have our MPS community in mind. I’m @FrSteveErie on Twitter. Thank you!

Through the sponsorship of the theology department, Mercyhurst Prep has joined schools and parishes across the nation in subscribing to FORMED.   This current subscription is open and available to every MPS student and their families. It’s also available to each MPS staff member. Here are the simple instructions for exploring FORMED:

1. Go to www.formed.org (or download the FORMED app to your device).
2. Click on “Register” and type in your email address and the MPS access code - CXGF2N.
3. Complete the information form and then hit “Submit.”

That’s all there is to it!

Students in several MPS theology courses have already begun using FORMED material in class. We encourage you and your family to explore the many resources you’ll find available. We hope you enjoy and that you find FORMED to be a pathway to a deeper relationship with God.
Financial and Entrepreneurial Workshops

Students interested in Junior Achievement should plan on attending the Personal Finance workshop, hosted by Dr. Ichabod Jung, on Saturday, January 27, and Saturday, February 3, from 8am until noon in the MPS Library.  The second workshop, Be Entrepreneurial, presented by Mrs. Vicki Zellefrow, will be held on Saturday, February 17, and Saturday, February 24, also in the MPS library.  Students must attend all of the sessions for both of the workshops to be eligible for the JA Scholarships.
