Looking Back &
The Road Ahead for 2018

 

3-½ years ago, the conversation began about a conservation burial ground in Mills River. Fast forward to today, and it is hard to believe how far we have come in such a short period of time. In December of 2015, we purchased the property. Most of 2016 was devoted to preparing the land by clearing many of the non-native trees, adding pathways and trails, and getting our systems in place to facilitate burials. It wasn’t until later that year, July 2016, that we had our first human burial. We had four more burials that year and by 2017, we had learned a great deal about the best ways to prepare a grave and guide a family through such an intimate and important process...

Getting Comfortable With Death

The Sanctuary's very own Cassie Barrett recently gave a talk at Creative Mornings, where the theme for November was Death. In her talk she shares an intimate story, talks about the relationship between fear and death, and shares the practice of 'Getting Comfortable With Being Uncomfortable,' to help lead to a better death and life.

Reflections of a Grave Digger: "Life and death have given me wonderful opportunities to explore my own connection to, and separation from, all life as well as interesting opportunities to learn about how to train my self. Like the air we breathe or the food we eat, death is a necessary part of life, and there has not been a culture in written history that did not require people to be buried in some way."
