The wire started lighting up last night that Auburn brass was set to hire Buffalo AD Greene to lead the Tigers. USA Today's Wolken has confirmed the move, but notes AU's board still needs to officially approve the selection. Wolken: "He will be the third African-American athletic director in SEC history, following Damon Evans, formerly of Georgia, and David Williams at Vanderbilt. He'll be the first hired from outside the institution, as both Evans and Williams were already working at their respective schools before being elevated to athletic director." (link); USA Today's Berkowitz adds some money context, says Greene will owe UB a buyout of "nearly $350,000." Witt/Kieffer gets the assignment to aid Cal in its search for a new AD. Chancellor Christ: "This is a truly important leadership recruitment for our University. The opportunities as well as challenges in college athletics today are significant." Witt/Kieffer's Santore, Young & Smith will support the effort. Santore calls the engagement an "exceptional opportunity" & expects there to be "tremendous interest in this position." No hiring timeline noted. (link)

I was obviously a firm believer in the process already, but stepping into it and having a chance to be part of the committee, it reaffirmed everything." + Hoops season can start three days earlier & the MBB Champions Classic featuring Kentucky, Duke, Michigan State & Kansas will tip us off next season. Miami (FL) AD & DI Council chair James: "Because we didn’t increase the number of games, schools also will have more flexibility to provide students time off during the holidays." WBB will also be able to start practice earlier. (link, link)
+ A proposal to limit the number of FB staffers who can handle on-campus recruiting was tabled. Big 12 Commish & FB Oversight Committee chair Bowlsby: "We know that we need some management tools around this issue of proliferation on staff positions. We will continue to be engaged on this and want to get this right." (link)
+ On the transfer debate, NCAA PR staffer Hosick tweets, "We're still a ways off from a transfer proposal. We don't have academic benchmarks, effective dates or other details that must be decided before anybody votes." (link)
+ There's discussion on association-wide policies for student-athletes with a history of sexual violence. Sounds like a "think tank" is being formed & will meet in Washington D.C. next week. Indiana Senior Assoc. AD for Academic Services White: "You have to have these conversations and they’re hard, right? When you’re recruiting someone, it’s not the first conversation you’ll have -- 'have you done something really terrible and bad?' But we want to make sure we are looking at their digital footprint, trying to figure out who these individuals are before we bring them to our campus." (link)
Question: How will Lane Kiffin affect Florida Atlantic's search for a new AD? Answer, per the Palm Beach Post's Elman, "Even with that single successful season under his belt, Kiffin does have a certain amount of leverage and power." Elman notes a new six-year deal for Kiffin is technically unsigned, but does not expect any deviations, also thinks Kiffin's background & social media practices will impact the candidate pool a bit. In closing, "Whoever replaces Chun will have his hands full with the second-year Owls coach, but so long as FAU keeps winning and attracting national attention, that’s a trade-off both sides may have to accept." (link)
If you're interested in the Eastern Washington AD opening: A potential option for the Eagles to help mitigate a $5.8M shortfall is by playing more FB road games. EWU currently only has four home games scheduled for 2018 & one source indicated "everything is still on the table." Other options include hosting a lower-level program, traveling to another FCS foe for some cash, trying to find another a FBS guarantee kick or just playing 10 next year. Looking further out, the 2019 slate currently has two open dates. (link)
Michigan State Prez Simon was in attendance yesterday at the Nassar sentencing hearing. Simon, when initially surrounded by the media, "This is their stories and their lived experiences with their words, and I’m not going to challenge those words because it’s important for them to say their words today in their own way. This is not the place for that conversation, and I won’t be engaged in that here." Author and Cal Professor Hansen answers "How to Have a Good Debate in a Meeting" for the Harvard Business Review. Six tips for making the conversation more "robust:" 1. Start by asking a question, not uttering your opinion - (it frames the problem to be debated); 2. Help quiet people speak up (and don't let the talkers dominate) - ("warm call" the quiet ones in advance to let them know you want to hear from them); 3. Make it safe for people to take risks - don't let the sharks rule - (create an atmosphere "in which people feel free to express work-relevant thoughts and feelings");  4. Take the contrarian view; 5. Dissect the three most fundamental assumptions - (do a deep dive); 6. Cultivate transparent advocates (and get ride of the hard sellers) - ("You want people to propose ideas and be passionate about them, but you also want them to be totally honest about the potential negatives.") (link)

Until the legal appealing of his firing by former Jackson State AD Brown has reached a resolution, JSU cannot advertise its vacant AD job and Assoc. AD for Academics/SWA Lavalais will continue to act as a "liaison between athletic personnel and the president's office." The Clarion Ledger's Cleveland says the department is "at a crossroads" with "no driver." Points to the Tigers lagging behind in the facilities arms race and budget ($7.6M), despite favorable attendance numbers compared to SWAC peers. Cleveland expects new Prez Bynum could turn to Mississippi Valley State AD Ford-Kee, but is concerned at the potential timetable, as FB HC Hughes enters the final year of his contract at 6-16 overall. Former Tennessee AD Hamilton catches up with Colorado State boss Parker to discuss a variety of topics, including the new on-campus FB digs for the Rams. Of note directly from Parker, "We probably would have had success if we just did a renovation, but the idea of having football back on campus got people real excited. The whole intent with an on-campus facility is to connect community to campus. […] Every job I’ve ever had has been the best job I’ve had at that moment. […] Capture those moments - whether micro or macro moments - to find some way to recharge your batteries and refresh yourself." Lots more. (link)
Sticking in the Mountain West for another clip, Fresno State Interim AD Robertello releases a statement on the Bulldog Stadium modernization project. Robertello emphasizes that it "continues to be an urgent priority and has not been placed on hold." The main changes look to be the phasing of the work, which may allow the Bulldogs to also invest in other needed facility enhancements. Specifically, "...we have initiated a feasibility study to help evaluate a potential expansion and renovation of facilities within the Student Athlete Village." Interestingly, given the timeline changes, any donors who made a commitment to the Bulldog Stadium push can "revisit" their pledge. (link)
After several months of planning, Oregon State launches a new mental health awareness initiative geared toward student-athletes called #DamWorthIt. Former Beavers gymnast Ricci and current Men's Soccer student-athlete Braaten spearheaded the conversation. Ricci: "Our goal is to destigmatize and spread awareness about the epidemic of mental health in collegiate athletics. The stresses of performing at a high level both academically and athletically are intense, and can lead to severe depression and in some cases suicide, as we tragically learned at Washington State this week and recently on the OSU campus." Braaten: "It's a chance for individuals to understand resources are available for people of all walks of life to gain assistance." (link)
Liberty's Flames Club experienced record growth in 2017, up 19% in membership (1,225 total members) and 5% in giving ($1.4M raised across annual fund, legacy/capital gifts and luxury suite sales). This is the 13th consecutive year the club has showed signs of growth, but the school's announced move to the FBS undoubtedly helped this year's numbers. Other highlights of the year: additional staff members added, suites sold out at Williams Stadium and the Liberty Baseball Stadium, as did courtside seating at the Vines Center for all MBB home games.(link)

Interesting to learn from an off-the-radar source, but College Hockey News reports that Arizona State is finalizing plans for an $80M, 5K-seat hockey facility that will sit next to Wells Fargo Arena, which would also see renovations. Article cites hope an on-campus arena could get the Sun Devils over the hump in terms of finding a conference home. (link)
Temple AD Kraft turns to his right-hand Owl, "Dr. Owliver," to deliver department updates in a UPS-whiteboard sort of way. Of note, 21% year-over-year annual fund growth and 71% increase in annual dollars raised, new facilities for rowing, fencing and golf, "wise owls" student-athlete academic achievements (12 consecutive department-wide 3.0 GPAs, last five 3.1 or better), and 4,000-plus community service hours last year. ESPN MBB Bracketology voice Lunardi believes there should be a threshold of resumes to make the Tourney & notes the strategy by major conferences to get more teams in the Dance is paying off. Lunardi's thesis: "We’re de-emphasizing winning. There are too many numbers and not enough common sense." One such threshold suggested by Lunardi is a .500 or better conference record, including the post-season tourney, "This would add more juice to the regular season, which the sport needs and, to a lesser extent, add a lot more juice to the Wednesday and Thursday afternoon games in conference tournaments as teams try to get to that threshold." (link)
WNBA All-Star and former Cal student-athlete Clarendon has filed a civil suit against the regents of the University of California, alleging she was sexually assaulted by Asst. AD for Student Services Muqtar during her freshman year. The suit claims negligence on the part of the regents and names Muqtar as a defendant. Cal's statement: "Cal Athletics is and will always be committed to fostering a culture where everyone feels safe, welcome and respected. Layshia holds a special place in our history for her contributions to Cal women's basketball both on and off the court and we are saddened to hear of the allegations that are coming to light today." Clarendon told Outside the Lines why she came forward: "I want the shame to not be my own anymore. I want the shame to fall on him, because it's not my shame to carry, but it's something that I've had to carry. It's a horrible thing to live in silence, to carry that pain and that weight and the guilt. My biggest hope is that he never does this to anyone else. That no one else has to suffer under his hand, or him violating their bodies again. That this would be the end of him assaulting people. And so it feels there is a big level of responsibility there for me, to make sure this doesn't continue. And he doesn't continue to harm other people." (link)
In the first of a two-part series, Diverse Issues in Higher Education's Clay examines hiring patterns for black FB HCs. Clay muses about the role the Harbaugh family has played in the ascent of Florida State's Taggart, citing the rarity of a black HC with a sub-.500 career record "who still has much to prove" continuing to climb the ladder (with the unmentioned caveat that Taggart's three stops so far have been major rebuilding projects), while also noting Tyrone Willingham and South Florida's Strong as exceptions to the "recycling game" that "has usually bypassed Black head coaches the past 20 years." More compelling, perhaps, is research cited that says the clearest path through implicit bias of white decision-makers is for a black coach to use the position of QB coach as a springboard to an OC position (see Taggart, Penn State's Franklin and Stanford's Shaw), although the researcher notes that this is true for white coaches as well.
