Domain Name Auction and other .ng Growth and Awareness Programmes in 2018

We have in the past organized events, participated in several events and embarked on projects in the bid to create awareness and keep the .ng brand in the subconscious mind of Nigerians and the entire world.
 
The potentials of creating a .ng domain name are numerous and had been highlighted.  The .ng domain name string can be used in many creative ways, to create domain names such as action (doing) verbs.
 
This year, we will be auctioning some premium and reserved domains names to the highest bidders as we delve more into the awareness programmes for the growth of the .ng brand. These programmes would take NiRA to the six geopolitical zones of our country, reaching out to the people, to project our culture and heritage as well as get as many SMEs as possible online.

Changing Nameservers and/or Domain Name Transfer
After you have registered your domain name, you might decide to connect the name to your website. There are several factors to consider. It is possible you have decided to purchase hosting services from another company or need to change your hosting company, different from that company you used to register the domain name. It is not absolutely compulsory to have the same company provide the two services. You can spread your risks. There are also several companies who provide hosting services with free domain names. The choice is totally yours on what you decide to do to take your business online.
 
To explain basic terminologies, please note the following:
Domain Name: This is the name chosen to project your online presence.
Web Hosting Service: Those in the business of providing Internet services for keeping, serving and maintaining files for websites.
Nameservers: This are directories (also called DNS Servers) that points your registered domain name to the servers of the company that hosts your website.
 
To clarify the issues related to domain transfers and/or change of name servers, we would elaborate further on available options. So if you have two different companies providing the different services, you could:

NITDA Represents Nigeria at Consumer Electronics Show 2018
National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) as part of its mandate of fostering the development and growth of the Information and Technology in Nigeria, was at 2018 Consumer Electronics Show held at Las Vegas, Nevada USA, from 9th to 12th January 2018. The Nigeria delegation to CES2018 was led by Director General NITDA, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami.

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is the world's gathering place for all those who thrive on the business of consumer technologies. It serves as the proving ground for innovators and breakthrough technologies — the global stage where next-generation innovations are introduced to the marketplace. Owned and produced by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), it attracts the world's business leaders and pioneering thinkers. www.ces.tech

At the CES 2018, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami stated that Nigeria holds great potentials for global industry giants seeking for new markets. He also quoted as saying that NITDA was at CES2018 to network, brainstorm, learn from other nations and professionals with the aim of fostering the growth of Information Technology in Nigeria.

Nigeria Internet Group Colloquium 2018
On Friday, 5th Jan. 2018, possibly the first Information and Communications Technology (ICT) event held in Nigeria in 2018, the Nigeria Internet Group (NIG) held their Colloquium and Annual General Meeting (AGM). These events which had top Nigeria ICT personalities held at Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) Office Complex, 8 Funsho Williams Avenue, Surulere, Lagos. Notable amongst the participants were the Honourable Minister of Communications Barr. Abdur-Raheem Adebayo Shittu, President, Nigeria Internet Group (NIG), Ms. Oyeronke M. Oyetunde, NIG Chairman Board of Trustees, Mr. Olawale Ige MFR, Immediate Past President NIG, Mr. Adebayo George Banjo, former ATCON President, Mr. Lanre Ajayi,   and host of others.
The theme for this Colloquium was “The Nigerian Internet Today: Issues and the Way Forward.”
Goodwill Messages were received from ICT stakeholders to support the event. Top speakers at Colloquium were representatives of Professor Umaru Garba Danbatta, EVC/CEO, Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC), Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, DG NITDA, and Revd. Sunday Folayan, President, NiRA.

NIG Annual General Meeting
Immediately after the Nigeria Internet Group Colloquium held on the 5th January 2018, NIG held its Annual General Meeting (AGM). Welcoming the members and participants to the AGM, the President NIG Ms. Oyeronke M. Oyetunde eulogizes everyone that had been supporting the group from inception.
The Nigeria Internet Group (NIG) was founded in 1995 as a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization to promote the Internet in Nigeria. The vision of the NIG is to leapfrog Nigeria into a pervasive Internet- employing nation in order to harness its power as a vehicle for development.
The president further presented the Annual Report of the group to members and promised further support and commitment to the Nigeria Internet Group (NIG).

Marrakech Identified as ICANN Meeting Site for 2019 Policy Forum

ICANN holds three meetings each calendar year in different regions of the globe. ICANN Public Meetings are a central principle of ICANN's multistakeholder model because they provide a venue for learning about ICANN, progressing policy work, conducting outreach, exchanging best practices, conducting business deals, and promoting interaction among members of the ICANN community, organization, and Board. Usually featuring more than 400 different sessions, these meetings are the focal point for individuals and representatives of the different ICANN stakeholder groups to introduce and discuss issues related to ICANN policy. Participants may attend in person or remotely. Meetings are open to everyone and registration is free.
