Aberdeen Presentation Sisters

Continuing a Legacy of Education
When the Aberdeen Presentation Sisters came to South Dakota, the greatest need of the people living in the area was for education. Since 1886, the Aberdeen Sisters have lived in the footsteps of Nano and her belief in Catholic education. Today, even though they are no longer teaching in these schools, these sisters continue their belief in and commitment to Catholic education.

Sisters Partner to Warm A Neighbor this January
Four years running, we have partnered with the Christian radio station in Sioux Falls, Life 96.5, on a monthly promotion. The radio station chooses a nonprofit in town each month to address a local need. They ask their listeners to help this organization by donating items. We have been fortunate to grow this partnership each year and be their “January ministry,” collecting warm winter items for clients at Caminando Juntos, our Latino ministry in Sioux Falls.

San Francisco Presentation Sisters

Guatemalan Indigenous Women Educational Dreams Continue
In 1992, Kay Sweeney, a Presentation Associate, went to Guatemala to volunteer with Sister Tonia Orland, a San Francisco Presentation Sister, who had started a religious community for Guatemalan indigenous women. Kay was struck by the natural beauty of the country and the beauty of the fabric woven by the indigenous women. However, she saw a problem - these women and their families were living very limited lives.

Kay learned that many had not attended school and did not speak Spanish, the national language. They longed for an education to learn new things and to earn money to provide a better life for themselves and their families.

The opportunity to help presented itself when a teacher at the convent talked with her about her dream of attending the university. It was clear that Kay could provide the very little support that would make that possible.

Read about how Kay began the the Kateri Tekakwitha Mission Fund, a fund that has provided more than 70 young women with scholarships for junior high and high school. >> Educational Dreams Continue
