On The Road Again

Keeping Current recently reported that Bob Murphy would be meeting soon with John Renfrow, a local commercial realtor, to explore our options for a more permanent home.   We imagined this was a proactive move but now might see it as a curious coincidence of timing.

On Monday, your Leadership Ministry Team received word from Megan Hess that she is closing her funeral home and associated businesses.   Our last Sunday in The Cabin will be February 25th.

Charting a course forward is now of utmost importance; on Sunday, Leadership will be meeting in the hour following worship this week to determine our next steps.  All are welcome to attend.

While we would have enjoyed a longer stay at The Cabin, we can all give thanks to God for the many ways in which our life as a congregation has been enriched by its cozy warmth and uplifting view of the San Juans.   We have grown spiritually, numerically, and have discovered any number of valuable things, including that worshiping together at tables is pretty darned awesome.

Although legwork will now be required to find a suitable new home, our greater work is to be a people committed to prayer.  First, let us keep Megan and her family in our prayers in what must be a most difficult time.   Let us also pray that the good seeds God has planted in our soil continue to grow and flourish as we listen closely for holy wisdom and encouragement in this time of transition.

As we move into an uncertain future, let’s keep singing the refrain from the hymn, Great Is Thy Faithfulness—“All we have needed Your hand has provided!”  God has provided so much all along the way.  Surely God has many marvelous things in store for us—and for the community we have been gathered to serve.

Yours on the journey,

What then?
Journey into Lent: A Half-Day Retreat for Ardent Pilgrims and the Not-So-Sure

The sacred season of Lent prepares us for Holy Week and Easter and begins on Ash Wednesday, a day of acknowledging our humanness. This year Lent begins on — wait for it — Valentine’s Day! This wonderful coincidence of timing invites us to reflect in new ways on the love alive in Jesus that would inspire him to make his way from the safety of the countryside to the holy city of Jerusalem, a journey Jesus knew would be hard and which would probably end horribly.

Instead of marking Lent’s beginning with an ashen cross on the forehead, Community Spirit is holding a half-day retreat on Saturday, February 10th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Loncar home. (Come a half-hour early to socialize and nosh beforehand and/or stay after for a bit of lunch if you don’t need to hurry away.)

To ground our learning and reflecting together, we’ll view the 90-minute documentary I’ll Push You. This beautifully photographed and edited film tells the story of Justin and Patrick who are life-long friends — one is able-bodied and the other is a paraplegic confined to a wheelchair — who together make a 500-mile pilgrimage along the historic El Camino de Santiago in northern Spain. As the title suggests, one man pushes the other other — and feeds, bathes, and clothes his friend every step of the many-miled way.

By itself, the film is deeply moving. Viewed through the lens of Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem, it invites new, life-giving perspectives on his willing suffering, the cross, and then the victory of love the church calls resurrection.

No matter where you are on your journey to make meaning of Lent and Holy Week, you are welcome here at this retreat!  To reserve your place, call Karen at 970-275-1725 or look for the signup sheet when you’re in worship. Although there is no charge, come ready to pitch a few pesos into the basket to cover the cost of refreshments.

Lenten Study (clipart)A Lenten Study for Folks Like Us!

American Christianity is undergoing a Spirit-guided shift — and even without our knowing it, Community Spirit is part of that holy unfolding! This March, come take part in a rich four-week series of one-hour sessions to explore what can only be described as a life-giving season in the progressive sector of the American church and in your own life, as well.

We'll be meeting at Pat Riddell's from 4-5 PM on Sunday afternoons in March to consider some of the stimulating observations in Brian McLaren's new book, The Great Spiritual Migration: How the World's Largest Religion is Seeking a Better Way to Be Christian. We won't be discussing the book itself but rather its themes as we work our way through an accessible companion study and, when we're together, short DVD segments.

While not explicitly related to Lent, this study will surely enrich our faith, affirm our unique journey as a church, and empower us as we move into God's future. (Brian McLaren is a pastor, a prolific writer, a popular speaker, and a most engaging teacher — just ask Mary Loncar who heard him speak in Atlanta several years back. )

You can purchase a participant's guide from Pastor Karen. The cost is $5.00.

ANAM CARA — A LIVING EXPERIMENT

I can no longer lift something that weighs 100 pounds.  But Beth and I together can. And if we add in the assistance of my brother Jerry, we can lift 150 pounds. Invite Beth’s brother Paul to the party, and we can now clear 200 pounds — probably even more. I cite this as an example of “cooperative effort.” Many years ago, I became conscious of the struggle some of our friends who were more advanced in years were having maintaining their independence, living on their own, and functioning in today’s world where multi-generational households are a rarity. It seemed quite clear to me then — and even more so now as I have gotten older — that aging is better faced in packs rather than alone.

Within about a week, my older brother — Father Bill (who has now fully retired from service as a Catholic priest) will be joining us to make his home here in Montrose at our Anam Cara ranch. Bill will represent the fourth family unit to reside at Anam Cara as Beth’s brother Paul and my other brother Jerry have been residing with us for several years. Our ages will now range from 57 to 73 — not exactly ancient but no “spring chickens” in the bunch either. With the entry of Bill into our midst, we are doing now what maybe should have been begun earlier — we are defining the purpose, intentions, and objectives for this “shared living” arrangement.

On the physical level of form, we hope to pool our talents, resources, and energy to help each other live fruitful and fulfilling lives. When something needs to be done or when one of us has a personal problem, we will address the solution collectively rather than individually. On the level of spirit, we hope to create an environment where the ongoing daily focus is on living a life of presence and increased awareness of our spiritual nature. We intend to foster a true “spiritual partnership.”

So what will that look like?  Beats me.  It’s a mystery, but one that is about to unfold. As we settle into this “life experiment”, our intention is that it bear spiritual fruit — not just enough to serve our own needs but an abundance that we can also share with you, our extended spiritual community. So stay tuned for further developments, please welcome Bill when you see him, and by the way, Anam Cara is Gaelic/Celtic for “a soul-level relationship.”
