Dispatches from the Journey Home
by Gerard
As I travel down the road of reentry, I have to obtain many basic things all over again, like my driver's license. Since getting my learner's permit at 14 ½ in Biloxi, MS, and license shortly after, I have had a motorcycle license, a military driver's license, and a German driver's license. During a long period of incarceration they all expired. In addition I wasn’t able to keep up with my child support obligation while I was locked up so there was a suspension on my license on top of some fines and late fees. Since my release, I have begun paying my child support and paid off the fines and late fees. I had to apply and be tested for a learner's permit all over again, which of course costs money. So do the road test, the reinstatement fee, and the license fee. It took me 114 days to accomplish the simple goal of getting my license back, but I made it happen. The bumpy ride on the highway to success continues!
