This weekly update provides a look at flu activity in Delaware County. While seasonal flu viruses can be detected year-round in the United States, flu viruses are most common during the fall and winter. The exact timing and duration of flu seasons can vary, but flu activity typically peaks between December and February, although activity can last as late as May. 

Although the flu season is well underway, it’s not too late to get the flu vaccine. With the influenza virus being more widespread across the country than it has been in 13 years, vaccination is an important prevention measure. Although the vaccine is not as effective against the current predominant subtype (Influenza A H3N2), other subtypes, such as H1N1 and Influenza B, are likely to increase. The vaccine should offer substantial protection for these subtypes and is therefore highly recommended as this season continues.
