JANUARY 2018 QRRRWN ENEWS

A message from Melissa Barnett
QRRRWN President

Happy New Year to all!

I am not one to make New Year’s resolutions but each year I do try to start each new year with one simple thing – a blessing of gratitude – for what I have, the good things that happened the year before and the lessons I hope I’ve taken away from the past year. There are constant reminders throughout every year to be grateful for what you have and this year already I have been reminded to be grateful that my children are strong and healthy, that the people I meet are kind and supportive and that when I need help there are people and places I can go to.

The Boxing Day storm in the South Burnett hit our place severely but my amazing community rallied around and within days I had offers of help, cakes delivered by the angels of Baked Relief and queries from BIEDO and Council whether we could use the services of Blaze Aid. It still looks a mess but no lives were lost and all our roofs are still on.

I am delighted to announce that the 2018 QRRRWN Conference will be held in Kingaroy, September 13th-15th. It is QRRRWN’s 25th anniversary and while it is wonderful that Conference should be held where QRRRWN started for its anniversary, I would like to give a very big thank you to the other communities that put their hands up to host the event. I think it is a measure of QRRRWN’s reach and importance to RRR women in Queensland that those two wonderful communities were at either end of the state. Thank you for your support and we’d love to come to a town near you!

Our first event of the year, for International Women’s Day and Queensland Women’s Week - “Walk Around Queensland” will be held the first week-end in March - I’m in training!  “You’re worth it” really is the truth.

The year’s first webinar with QRRRWN’s very lovely Pam Greet is on 20th February. Also keep an eye out for information about our Be Confident Forum – an exciting opportunity for QRRRWN members.

Until next month, be grateful, be kind and start walking – we need those steps!

2018 Webinar Series Kicks off in February...

Tuesday February 20th February 2018, 6-30pm.

I QUIT FASHION… with Pamela Greet

We are excited to feature as our first Webinar guest of the New Year, Pamela Greet.

Want to walk away from a webinar confident of knowing what to do?  When writer and social entrepreneur Pam, decided to embark on her Fiftythings 2016 project, she had no idea how many ripples, this decision would create.  Join us to hear her what she learnt, and what surprised her.

When it comes to clothes, less is more.  More manageable, more sustainable, more creative and having less gives you more opportunity to be yourself and to enjoy improvising.  Like everything worthwhile, a small wardrobe takes planning and commitment.  During the webinar, Pam has promised to share key learnings and practical and achievable ways to downsize your wardrobe.

QRRRWN offers the webinars free to members, so to renew your membership go to: qrrrwn.org.au/membership/

QRRRWN Be Confident Virtual Forum 2018

“There are always three speeches, for every one you actually gave. The one you practiced, the one you gave, and the one you wish you gave.” –Dale Carnegie

If you have always wanted to become better at connecting and communicating by harnessing the ability to speak well in public, but haven’t been able to find an encouraging group to nurture your endeavours, then the Be Confident Virtual Forum is for you!   Be someone who can speak readily and comfortably in public, chair meetings with poise and confidence by being inspired by finding your voice and encouraging other participants to find theirs.

Want skills that will help you lead?

For the first time, Forum will be offered on-line as the result of QRRRWN and FORUM forming an affiliation in 2017.  Harnessing Forum’s 75 plus years experience in developing and encouraging others to practise skills in meeting procedure and public speaking, and QRRRWN’s expertise with on-line platforms, we are able to offer women the opportunity to develop your best self, to unlock their potential and communicate their thinking and passion with others.

 What’s involved?

Firstly – everything is done via webinar – so the location of your choice, and no travel costs! All you require to ‘attend’ is your phone or computer.  The ten sessions are 60 minute sessions – just an hour each time.

There are ten fortnightly sessions covering meeting procedure, the role of office bearers, a framework to use when writing prepared speeches and a formula to use for unprepared speeches. There are opportunities to practise all of these skills and to hear an analysis of your delivery from Forum assessors. The meetings are facilitated by long standing Forum members who are skilled at nurturing and supporting the skills of others.  Participants will receive access to:-

  •  A pre course survey, mid-session survey and a final survey

  • An outline of the 10 week sessions

  • QRRRWN VIRTUAL FORUM course material booklet – a PDF version will be emailed to you

  • Access to the Forum Communicators website

  • Membership of Forum Communicators.

 Cost…

The maximum number of participants is 20, with the cost being $59 (QRRRWN members) and $99 (non-QRRRWN members). Participants will receive Forum’s meeting procedure workbook (online version included in price, printed copy $15 + postage)

 Make it happen!

The sessions are capped – with no more than 20 partipants.  This keeps the sessions initimate with everyone able to interact without overwhelm.  The forums are filling up, so don’t wait to register – start 2018 by investing in yourself.

'Walk Around Queensland' Project - March 2018

The Queensland Rural, Regional and Remote Women’s Network (QRRRWN) is excited to announce that it has been the recipient of a Queensland Women’s Week grant for a project called ‘Walk around Queensland’.

Overcoming isolation of rural, regional and remote (RRR) women by connecting virtually and face to face in Kingaroy, the project aims to motivate RRR women to exercise and actively care for their wellbeing.  With many women putting themselves and their health last on the priority list, the theme “You’re worth it” is set to encourage a reshuffling of the priority order.

The project involves participants from across the state using the free Map My Walk app during Queensland Women’s Week to log their daily walk/jog/run & other physical activities to a purpose built facebook group page.  Each post will add to the cumulative kilometres walked by all participants and tracked on a Queensland map showing and celebrating how far the group has walked around Queensland.

Prizes will be up for grabs for those who participate in a number of categories and there will be information, inspiration, motivation and support channelled through the facebook group page in the lead up to and after the event.

Being launched in Kingaroy on 3 March is significant for QRRRWN in its 25th year as the South Burnett is the birthplace of QRRRWN (formerly QRWN and RWN) and will also be the community hosting the 25th QRRRWN state conference in September this year.

The project will encourage accountability by connecting participants who sign up, creating incentive for them to exercise more frequently through daily competitions creating a fun atmosphere and recognition of women participating.  The seven-day commitment is hoped to encourage continued walks and leaving the facebook page open after the event will encourage continued connectedness between members.

Everyone is invited to participate in the project – keep an eye on the QRRRWN facebook page and website for more information about how to register.

For more information, please contact QRRRWN on 1300 795 571

This project has been supported by YWCA Queensland and the Queensland Government.

Membership Update

Hi to QRRRWN members from Cecily,

Happy New Year to you all!   May 2018 be your best year yet.

The plans for membership this year are beginning to evolve and I am filled with enthusiasm to meet as many of you as possible to hear your ideas and also to talk to you about mine.  I want to hear about your member needs…..why it is that you belong to QRRRWN and tell you about what it is the QRRRWN board members are doing as well as hear from you what you consider is important and what it is that we might do to meet those needs.  At the same time, you might also have some new ideas.  Some informal conversations with you around what it is you think we do well and what things you consider that we might focus on to improve would also be great.

Last month I described my plans for a mentoring program that can be offered to interested members The program is designed with members in mind - members who might have an interest in how QRRRWN works as an organisation as well have as an interest in upskilling or broadening skill set/s.  There are some great opportunities emerging.  It would be great to hear from you.

Hope the coming month presents exciting achievable challenges for you.

Talk soon.

Member in the Spotlight

Vale Fay Collard

Fay Collard, a treasured friend to so many people. She was a wife to Neil and mother of Lehanne, Belinda and Ricki and a doting grandmother.

She was a member of QRRRWN almost since inception and was an integral part of the Barambah branch of our organisation. On reading through a comprehensive local scrap book kept from the Barambah branch Fay’s photo and smiling face is there attending many of our functions. She held executive positions locally with QRRRWN and was always ready to assist in our many events and cultural competitions.

Fay had the most wonderful farewell service on the 9th of November at the Murgon Uniting Church where there was standing room only.

At her service and on speaking with her husband Neil afterwards I learned much more of this diversely talented lady. Fay taught music, piano and organ to local children and her love of music was evident as she played for the church, conducted their choir and also the town band.

During their business life Fay was Australian President of the Porkalettes an organisation for women in the pork industry. She also managed a pork industry food outlet at the Brisbane Exhibition for 9 years.

In keeping with Agriculture Fay was a life member of the   Murgon Show Society and first woman president. For many years she trained the showgirls for their presentation evening.

Fay was a member of the Quota club and supported many other organisations, too numerous to mention.  In recent years as they slowly tried to retire Neil and Fay had some memorable trips on their motorbike, travelling across the Nullarbor together. What a sense of adventure they both had.

On talking to Neil I commented that with so much going on in her life it was remarkable that they managed to stay together and were a devoted couple.

A life well lived and those who knew Fay are blessed to have had her in our lives.
