(Watch) Thoughts On Leadership: Auburn's Allen Greene
NCAA Prez Emmert addresses his membership, updates on action items to improve the MBB landscape - and industry at large - amid considerable drama. The Commission on College Basketball will report its findings & recommendations during an April 25 Board of Governors meeting. New legislation will be presented prior to the 2018-19 season as an outcome. Emmert: "What we saw with that FBI investigation is Exhibit A for demanding action. A coach, allegedly, who takes a bribe in order to steer a student who has placed his trust in that coach -- to steer that young man to a financial adviser who is going to bilk him out of money is disgusting. It's corrupt. It's just wrong. And it feeds all the cynics." Another major next step: A new strategic plan for the entire association as the last version from 2004 is outdated. More from Emmert, including, "It's one thing to make a decision here in a convention in a committee meeting room. It's an entirely other thing to make it stick on game day, when there's pressure on you. We have to fight against that drift, because the core values of college sports are worth protecting." (link, link); Here's video of Emmert's full address. (link)
More from the NCAA Convention in Indy:
+ $10M in reserves has been set aside for implementation of recommendations from the Commission on College Basketball, though the details are obviously not known quite yet. Another $2.5M annually will be earmarked starting with the 2019-20 budget. An additional $31.5M will be distributed this February that are the result of unallocated net assets. Key: "The distribution will be based on the number of athletics opportunities provided by scholarships, number of teams and success in the men’s basketball championship. These funds are in addition to the normal annual distributions given to members." (link)
+ NC State AD Yow challenged the path we're going down on the transfer front. Per ESPN's Sherman, "[Yow] suggested that tampering would be rampant if transfers were granted immediate eligibility and estimated that the number of transfers across DI would more than double." Transfer working group committee chair & South Dakota State AD Sell urged patience. (link)
+ More details on the transfer debate, including more time for Sell's group to come with specific recommendations on how to tackle the potential competitive landscape-altering move. (link)
+ A FB redshirt vote is coming in April. Miami (FL) AD & DI Council Chair James: "I don’t think it’s right for a young man to lose a redshirt over what may be a need for a team, in a competitive situation, to have to find a player to play. Whether it’s a bowl game or a game late in the season, personally, I struggle with why we would take away the redshirt." Four game threshold. (link)
+ Scroll to the bottom for a list of votes coming today from 'Autonomy 5' leaders & participating student-athletes. Medical coverage for two years beyond the exhaustion of eligibility is one key issue. (link)
Greene to Auburn: Presser this morning at 10A. Former AU Women's Golf HC & search committee member Evans: "We looked for a charismatic up-and-coming and elite leader to take Auburn Athletics into the future, and we found the very best in Allen Greene." Another search committee member, former Gymnastics student-athlete Mills, "Allen possesses the expertise and tenacity to lead our Athletics Department to even greater heights. His will to win is contagious. He's an authentic communicator who will be impactful in leading our student-athletes, staff and stakeholders." More high praise for Greene, including some from Duke AD White. (link)
The San Jose Mercury News' Wilner on the AD search at Cal, "Witt/Kieffer is an atypical hire for a major college AD hunt in that it typically handles small schools and/or academic searches, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The fresh eyes could uncover qualified candidates who wouldn’t otherwise have been considered. Most of the search firms used by Power Five schools have working lists of preferred candidates, thereby shrinking the canvass. […] Cal cannot afford messy, on numerous levels." Further, Wilner pens on why the university did well by not "going the easy route" & awarding the search to Collegiate Sports Associates. (link)
Who might be next at Buffalo? The Buffalo News runs down a list of potentials, led by Arizona State Senior Assoc. AD & former UB MBB student-athlete Cagwin. Former Bradley AD & current Penn State Asst. AD for Biz Dev Cross, Michigan Executive Assoc. AD Gnodtke, Iona AD Cole, St. Bonaventure boss Kenney, Alfred (DIII) AD Vecchio & Worcester State (DIII) AD Mudd also mentioned. (link); UB Prez Tripathi lauds outgoing AD Greene, says details on what's next will come next week. (link);  Eastern Washington Prez Cullinan will begin meeting with athletic department personnel in Cheney today in an effort to determine what the Eagles need in its next leader. Next week we should lead the makeup of EWU's search committee. (link)
Ole Miss AD Bjork with deep thoughts on the trajectory of his tenure in Oxford, as well as perspective on moving forward amid some rough waters over the past couple of years. Of note, "That’s probably the biggest criticism I hear: I wish we did more publicly, I wish we’d 'fight back' and when you ask what that means, no one really has an answer. It’s just I want to see it on Twitter, I want to see it in a quote. I want to see it in a press conference or I want to see an article written. So there’s all kind of different ways I think we have fought back, it just might not be behind a podium or in front of a camera pounding our fist on the table and I’m not sure that’s effective every time. […] We have to set the tone as an athletic department that says, ‘Look, we know what happened. We’re going to learn from our mistakes. We’re going to own those situations, we’re going to deal with it.’ But we’re also here to compete at the highest level. We’re in the SEC so it’s not for the faint of heart, so if you’re not ready to embrace that and continue that, then we won’t compete. But we’re ready to compete." More, including comments from Bjork's former boss, UCLA AD Guerrero. (link)
Ernst & Young's Pitts met with Georgia brass to discuss the new tax code. Points to some confusion within language on exactly what portions of HC pay will be levied. On the 80% deduction change, "I know for the University of Georgia, you have a long list of people who want to buy football tickets and other tickets. If I decided I’m not going to buy mine anymore, there’s somebody who will." (link); Baylor AD Rhoades says what most ADs are these days on the topic, "We encourage all of our donors to consult with their tax experts. We’re certainly not in a position to tell anyone how to handle their own tax deductions." (link)
The Women's Basketball Committee unveiled its first of three regular season top-16 seeds, with UConn (Albany Region), Mississippi State (Kansas City Region), Louisville (Lexington Region) and Oregon (Spokane Region) earning No. 1 seeds. The remaining 12 teams, in order: Tennessee, Notre Dame, Texas, South Carolina, Baylor, Ohio State, Florida State, UCLA, Missouri, Texas A&M, Rutgers and Georgia. Nevada Senior Assoc. AD/SWA and Chair of the Committee Bennett: "It’s always difficult in mid-January to identify the top teams with conference play just getting underway. This first ranking serves as a conversation starter as there are numerous games in the next several weeks that will help to further identify where teams should be seeded." The next in-season rankings come out February 1. (link)

More from the Women's Basketball Committee, as the group announced finalists to host the 2021-24 Final Fours: Cleveland, Dallas, Houston, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Minneapolis, Nashville, and San Antonio still in the mix. Announcement should come in October. (link); Speaking of finalists, Amazon is down to 20 for its second head quarters, where it plans to invest $5B in development and create up to 50K jobs. (link

Clemson AD Radakovich's advice to new College Football Playoff selection committee members, "You’d better like football. You’ve got to like watching it and dissecting it and making sure that you come forward with some really good ideas about how you’re going to present your views." On the need to be hyper prepared, "Because you always wanted to make sure that if people asked you a question or the discussion was there, you wanted to be able to lend some type of good opinion and be prepared to talk about stuff." No word if Radakovich got his "cup of Dabo" before each meeting. (link)
Seminole Boosters, Inc. SVP of Development Dasher highly complimentary of new Florida State FB HC Taggart & his willingness to push for more cash support from donors. Dasher: "He's fantastic, he's positive, he's one of us." Seminole Boosters Prez Miller applauds FSU brass for a seamless search, "they made it look routine." Lots of money metrics pointing up for the philanthropic arm for the athletic department as the major gifts team looks to have totaled $20M to $22M by the end of the month, over 800 new FB season tix have been sold & "cash contributed is over double what it was at this time last year." Seminole Boosters pushes $22M to athletics annually, plus another ~$10M to cover debt service payments. (link)
The Arizona Daily Star's Hansen doesn't think the use of DHR at Arizona to help with the hire of new FB HC Sumlin was totally necessary. Part of Hansen's context comes from the search firm-less processes run by former Wildcats Prez Dempsey, including the on-boarding of current AD Heeke. Here was Heeke's response when asked during Sumlin's presser, "Let me be clear: The president and I make the decision. I make the decision on who the head football coach is. Search consultants provide an opportunity for conversations, help us vet candidates and bring people to the table who might be interested in the position. It’s our job as administrators, it’s my job as athletic director to determine who the next head coach will be." A bit more. (link)
Auburn & former Baseball HC Galloway have settled their legal dispute. "Amicable settlement of all issues" is how the proceedings have come to an end that also included outgoing AU AD Jacobs, former COO & current UConn AD Benedict, Executive Assoc. AD McGlynn, former Director of Baseball Operations Duval,  Assoc. AD for Operations Roberts, plus the Board of Trustees. Technically, Galloway's push was a wrongful termination suit. (link)
Interesting read from the Washington Post on American U. Prez Burwell serving as an honorary captain for AU's WBB squad. Burwell, a former Obama Administration senior leader, actually lettered in hoops during her years at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. Burwell: "You feel the energy from the team. You feel how they play together. You feel how they work with the coach. It was excellent to be there and so fun to just be on the bench and be that close to the game and that close to the action." Burwell also notes the requirement of losing graciously, "Whether it’s health care or the Affordable Care Act or in sport." (link)
CBSSports.com's Dodd writes on the growing trend of FB student-athletes entering their name early into the NFL Draft. So far we're looking at 112 early entrants with the official number coming from the NFL later this week. Check this out: "Since 2014, when NFL draft evaluations changed for juniors, almost a third (31.6 percent) of those declaring have gone undrafted." 31.6%! Veteran NFL scout Brandt: "They keep coming every day [into the draft] and about 50 of them shouldn't come. They're getting the right information from the league, but they don't pay any attention to it." The allure of dollar signs may be part of the story & Oregon Senior Assoc. AD of HDC Administration & Operations Hawkins takes the NCAA to task for not doing more to push agent laws. (link)

Twitter got a 4.1% bump in unique visitors during live entertainment and sporting events, while other social media platforms, in aggregate, saw no significant change per comScore. Engagement was more stark during major events such as the Super Bowl, when Twitter saw a 19% increase in unique visitors, while other social platforms, in aggregate, saw a decline. A Twitter-commissioned study by Neuro-Insight found across-the-board boosts to event and ad engagement and memorability by those with a TV + Twitter viewing experience, as opposed to just one or the other. (link)

With AD Chun headed to Washington State, Florida Atlantic will name Senior Assoc. AD for Internal Operations Battle as the Owls' interim boss. Battle came to Boca in 2014, with previous stops at UNC Greensboro, Florida State and Georgetown. No word on a timeline for the permanent hire. (link)
The Grand Forks Herald's Editorial Board gets its two cents in on what new North Dakota AD Chaves should be thinking about early in his tenure. 1) Take small steps to achieve progress; 2) Salve the wounds of the nickname debate; 3) Build the FB program back up; 4) Lead the charge into the new conference; and, 5) Work fundraising channels. "Athletics play such a large role in this community that Chaves, simply by taking office, becomes one of the most influential figures in Grand Forks." (link)

(link)
Alabama sent a four-page letter to Outkick the Coverage's Travis threatening to sue him if he didn't stop selling his "Aloha, Bit**es" t-shirt. Travis first designed the shirt after the success of former Oregon QB Mariota and revamped it in honor of Tide student-athlete Tagovailoa. No one should be surprised by Travis' response: "The A on our shirt is definitely not the Alabama A that you have trademarked and copyrighted, it is just a cursive A. Moreover no one thinks an Outkick shirt is licensed by Alabama. [...] Is it your contention that Alabama controls the use of all cursive letter A’s on all shirts? Would you like to design and email the site a cursive A that would be permissible to use? I’d be interested to see your version and would be potentially willing to change our A to one you deem more appropriate if it works on the shirt. If you’d like us to add a disclaimer that says the shirts aren’t licensed or endorsed by Alabama — or publish your letter on Outkick saying the same — I’m happy to do that as well. But as a lawyer who has worked in trademark and copyright law I’m not sure what claim you guys have here. You don’t have a copyright on our cursive version of the letter A or any claim on the phrases used on the shirt." More. (link)
