Spring News from Art at the Heart of the RUH
View this email in your browser
It has been an inspirational start to the New Year with discussions and plans taking shape with 3 commissioned artists for the RNHRD & Therapies Centre. I have also been consulting several patients and staff on their views and wishes for the new build. The overriding theme for the Hydro pool area will be ‘Flow’.

“This would represent the aspiration of rheumatic patients, for whom free movement of any kind is limited. It also enshrines something of the relief that patients feel in the warm pool where a sensation of weightlessness and free flowing movement is such a huge relief.” RNHRD Patient

Patient and staff engagement is a very important part of the creative process and we would welcome anyone who wishes to get involved in the art and design strategies for the Cancer Centre.

Still on the subject of ‘water’; 44AD Gallery in Bath and Art at the Heart of the RUH were invited to take part in an Engage workshop with Bath University Researchers and the project that we proposed from that day was selected from 10 projects to be awarded funding. The project is called: River is the Venue (RIV) and we will be working in partnership with research academics at the University of Bath.

The focus of the project is on historical flooding events in Bath and will involve the commissioning for a series of art installations across key flooding sites, as the project evolves audiences will be exposed to fascinating elements of the water history of the City.

There will be an engagement event at the Min on Tuesday 13th February, please see the invitation and further details in this newsletter.
Last, but by no means least, we will be saying goodbye and thank you to Steve Boxall: Head of Capital Projects and Chair of the Arts Strategy Group from 2009-15. Art at the Heart owes much of its success to Steve’s commitment over the years.

A fantastic showcase of the RUH Staff’s artistic talents has been on display for the RUH Staff & Volunteer Exhibition and on Friday 12th January, Wera Hobhouse MP made a special visit to the RUH to present the People’s Vote prize.

STITCH IN TIME
A number of materials are used within Stitch in Time workshops and clay was introduced to patients on Combe Ward recently. Artist in Residence, Edwina Bridgeman and Volunteer, Ida encouraged patients to make handprints and initially it was quiet but the patients were absorbed in their making. As the morning progressed the room became noisier with lots of laughter. These workshops encourage social interaction, telling of stories and group conversation and often patients stay and have lunch together after the session.

Artist Edwina says “I was struck by the encouraging attitude of the patients; very quickly they became a group and helped each other."

The artist's intention is to share these life stories in an exhibition, to not only display the patients’ artwork but to respond to the fascinating tales told in the workshop by creating her own body of work to reflect this.

ARTSPARKS
Artist in Residence, Mary Chamberlain has been working with patients and their families on the children’s ward. She has been demonstrating how to stretch canvases using linen and patients have also been working on cotton duck canvas which shows off the images particularly well.

This year the children have been looking at ‘MY Big Planet Earth’ as the overarching theme and focussing each month on elements in creation. For January, the focus has been on Birds. Participants have looked at Peacocks and Pheasants using paper and collage, also Owls and Swans using mixed media, canvas and air drying clay.

Artist in Residence, Mary says “It has been brilliant working with the children using different materials and beginning a new year with an exploration of the beauty of our world.”
SOUNDBITE
The Soundbite Performance Programme brings a diverse range of live music to communal areas of the hospital and wards. Live Music Now Musicians 'The Bingcows' will be performing on Friday 9th February 2018 at 1 - 1.30pm in the Atrium and then on two wards from 1.45 - 3.30pm to perform for patients.
To see more up-and-coming lunchtime music performance dates, check our website as we will update as soon as we have new performances scheduled!

"What a fantastic idea. It really brought a bit of light relief to the ward. Great to see the patients asking for requests and enjoying the music. Well done." Visitor on Combe Ward

ART COMMISSIONS & DESIGN

New Spiritual Care Centre

The interior design and commissioning of artworks for the new Spiritual Care Centre is now complete. It features a beautiful stained glass window, 'Reaching Out' designed by designer-maker Sally Pollitzer. Sally is a painter as well as a maker of stained glass windows and landscape is often reflected in her glass designs, however abstract they may appear. Sky, hills and sunlight are represented with colour. Two stained glass works from the old chapel have also been moved in to the new centre.

There is a stunning cast bronze sculpture by artist, Chris Buck titled ‘In your arms’ that sits in the brand new courtyard space. Chris studied in Cornwall and he is inspired by the St. Ives abstract artists, and is a Member of the Penwith Society of Arts founded by Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson. He produces sculpture in both wood and stone, it is in bronze that he finds the greatest satisfaction, combining natural forms and industrial precision to achieve individual pieces of strength and beauty.

This spiritual care space will function as a sanctuary - a place of comfort and refuge - for people with different needs who come from a wide variety of belief systems.

The RNHRD and Therapies Centre

'Flow' is the key word and two commissions related to the Hydro Therapy Pool will use this theme as a base.

Hydro Therapy Pool Glazing

The artist Christopher Tipping made his first site visit at the end of January and will be working intensively over the next 6 weeks to meet the contractor’s deadline to achieve a detailed design by the end of February. Chris will undertake a period of contextual and site specific research to underpin and influence the project. To achieve this he will consult with the client team and a number of key organizations, individuals and agencies within the client NHS Trusts and relevant external agencies, such as Museum and Archive services.

The artwork will include etching, sandblasting and enamelling treatments to the inner face of the double glazed unit. This is an authentic finish, rather than using vinyl manifestations; these don’t have a long shelf life. They cost less but lack the depth, quality and endurance of traditional treatments.
Geographical Timeline: Hydro Therapy Pool corridor

Ross Bennett is researching the properties of Corian ™ and potential to inlay the ‘flow’ of thermal water with Bristol Blue glass. All materials need to be tested for Health & Safety purposes.

Alongside this abstract notion of flowing water the surface material would be laser cut to show the topographical map of the water’s journey from the Mendips to Bath; which takes approximately 2,000 years!

Ross will now work on developing material ideas and combinations, particularly on surfaces and textures. He will consider the context and audience for the work carefully and aim to make the timeline a calm and an uplifting experience.
“Seeing artwork along the corridors changes the experience of a hospital visit for patients. Absolutely wonderful." Patient

'RIVER IS THE VENUE' PROJECT
Amongst various community workshops and activities, this project will see a series of public artworks commissioned by local artists as a trail of temporary outside installation/sculptures along key historical flood sites. The artworks will be presented and designed with a view of their accessibility for all.

We have an upcoming workshop on the 13th February and we hope that you and/or your colleagues are able to attend this event, please see the below invite.
