3D printing creates super-soft structures that replicate brain and lungs

A new 3D printing technique allows researchers to replicate biological structures, which could be used for tissue regeneration and replica organs. Imperial researchers have developed a new method for creating 3D structures using cryogenics (freezing) and 3D printing techniques. This builds on previous research but is the first to create structures that are soft enough to mimic the mechanical properties of organs such as the brain and lungs. Their technique, created in collaboration with Kings College London, is published in the journal Scientific Reports. See the full article on our website.

Game-changing inventions from Imperial students

As one of the UK's most innovative universities, Imperial has seen scores of pioneering start-ups grow within its walls. From global sustainability solutions to next-generation AI applications, Imperial students are using their creative and entrepreneurial talents to tackle some of the most important challenges facing our world. The Venture Catalyst Challenge, one of the flagship programmes run by Imperial Enterprise Lab, is the first step for many Imperial students who want to turn their ideas into new technologies and businesses. See the full article to find out where previous participants have ended up.
Outreach Impact

The Imperial Outreach team has put together the first Outreach Impact infographic, which visualises destination information for a group of outreach participants, after they have reached the age of 18. Facts include how 10,000+ school students took part in outreach science activities in 2013–2015 and how 88% of the students went into STEM-related courses at University. The Outreach team is planning to conduct more work around impact measures and evaluation in the coming year. You can read our 2015-16 Annual Report on our website.

Upcoming events

Airbus Open Day – 25 April

The Department of Aeronautics and Airbus are hosting a free event, Airbus Open Day, for Year 9 and 10 girls studying STEM subjects, to inspire the next generation of female Aerospace Engineers. Students will hear about current advances in Aerospace Technology from Imperial academics, and about inspirational careers from Airbus engineers. Students will also explore activities in aircraft stability, the science of aerodynamics and rockets, to spark interest and stimulate students’ creativity in both mathematics and physics. For more information and to book, contact Dr Siti Ros Shamsuddin at s.shamsuddin07@imperial.ac.uk.
Newlands Lecture: 'Functional Coatings'  – 25 April, 16:30

In this free lecture, Professor Ivan Parkin looks at the formation of self cleaning surfaces. The work focusses on superhydrophobic surfaces and shows how they can be made and used in a wide range of applications. The lecture involves a number of demonstrations including a superhydrophobic race track,  the treatment of filter paper to make it completely un-wettable and the phenomena of water bouncing on highly water- repellent surfaces. The lecture is recommended for Year 10 to 13 students, their teachers and parents. For more information and to register see the events page.

Science Communication Theatre Workshops

Imperial College London are seeking Year 10 to 13 students to take part in free science communication interactive theatre workshops, in partnership with Nexus Theatre Company. Using the research undertaken at Imperial, we will explore issues around climate change and the environment, and how these may be communicated and explored through the medium of theatre and the creative arts. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to get involved with cutting-edge research being produced by Imperial, alongside a budding young theatre company. To book see the event page (password: Nexus). For more information contact Dr Zoe Harris at z.harris@imperial.ac.uk.
Lecture:  'Quantum Circus' – 7 February, 19:00

Join us for this popular show staged by Dr Simon Foster and students from the Controlled Quantum Dynamics Group, to explain all you need to know about the peculiarities of quantum physics. Quantum technologies have already changed the world around us, from lasers to flash drives. In this lecture you will hear about the beginnings of Quantum Mechanics to the research being done at Imperial today. There is an allocation of free tickets for GSCE and A-level students (first-come-first-served). For more information see the website or email admin@friendsofimperial.org.uk

Generation Tech challenge event, J.P. Morgan – Saturday 3 March

Generation Tech is a one-day technology design challenge targeting Year 12 and 13 female STEM students. The event will bring together creative minds to find solutions to social challenges, allowing participants to work with J.P. Morgan technical experts to design prototype solutions using web technologies, wireframing and mockup tools. The aim is to inspire talented female STEM A-Level students to consider Computer Science as a degree choice, expose them to technology career options and inform them to consider J.P. Morgan as an employer of choice. For more information email generation.tech.uk@jpmchase.com.

Salters' Festival of Chemistry 2018

The Salters' Festival of Chemistry will be held at Imperial College on Friday 20 April 2018. The objective is to help promote the appreciation of chemistry and related sciences among young people. Students can look forward to hands-on practical chemistry challenges in the labs within the Department of Chemistry, exciting chemical demonstrations, prizes for winning schools and certificates for all participants. Schools may enter only one team of four students from Years 7 and 8. For more information on how to enter visit the website here or email festivals@salters.co.uk

Programmes for schools

Summer Schools 2018

Applications are now open for the following summer schools:
  • Year 9 Engineering Summer School
  • Year 10 Insights into Science & Engineering Summer School
  • Year 11 Project STEM Summer School
  • Year 12 Engineering Summer School
  • Year 12 Work Experience Programme
Attending a summer school is a great way to discover what it is like to study at Imperial and what life is like as a student in London. For more information including dates, eligibility criteria and the application links see our website.
Royal Society of Biology – Biology Challenge

The next Biology Challenge will take place between 6 – 26 March 2018. Teachers can register their 13-15 year old students to participate in the competition. The Biology Challenge stimulates students’ curiosity for the natural world and encourages them to take an interest in biology outside of school. Questions will be set on the school curriculum, but students who have expanded their knowledge through their own research will also be rewarded. Top scoring students are rewarded with publicly recognised certificates and will be offered the opportunity to attend an awards ceremony in London. For more information see the website.

School Visits Programme

Jane Marshall, Imperial's Outreach School Visits Programme Manager, is offering entertaining and informative talks to sixth formers in state schools across London and the South East covering topics including the benefits of a degree and choosing your course and university, writing an excellent Personal Statement and how to perform well at interview. She also offers mock interviews for Year 13 students. Jane is taking bookings for spring and summer 2018 and beyond; you can contact her at j.marshall@imperial.ac.uk.
