This weekly update provides a look at flu activity in Delaware County. While seasonal flu viruses can be detected year-round in the United States, flu viruses are most common during the fall and winter. The exact timing and duration of flu seasons can vary, but flu activity typically peaks between December and February, although activity can last as late as May. 
 

Ohio, like the rest of the country, is continuing to see an increase in influenza cases. This week, Ohio has seen the highest number of influenza-associated hospitalizations since reporting was required in 2011. Vaccination is still recommended to help fight the flu, however, influenza vaccine effectiveness has been generally lower against the current predominant strain (Influenza A). With lower vaccine effectiveness, in addition to vaccination for prevention, use of antiviral medications for treatment will become even more important than usual.
