Theme: Called to Challenge
Scriptures: 1 Samuel 3:1-20 and John 1:43-51
Sermon: “Hearing Difficult Words” by Rev. Kathryn Kuhn
Our focus scripture from Samuel comes at an interesting time, considering what is happening in our country and world. The context of this scripture was that Israel had been ruled by judges and the word of God was to be spoken by the prophet, Eli. However, according to the scripture, Eli has not been speaking up for God. He has not even named the sins of his own family. So he is replaced by one who will listen for God and speak, the young Samuel.
We also live during a time when the voice of God is not in our ears the way other voices are. The egos of a few are placing us in danger and the phrase “speak truth to power” is spoken to me. When we elevate ourselves by denigrating others, it exposes our insecurities and, therefore, our powerlessness. Rather, may we choose to remember Micah 6:8 in its Hebrew transliteration, “to do justly, love goodness and walk humbly with your God.”
Prayer: Call to us again, O Lord. May we hear your voice, as clearly as Samuel, giving us directions to live according to your will this day. Amen.
