To Renew with Discount - Offer Expires 15th January

Like it says above, tomorrow is your last chance to renew and take advantage of the 10% discount.  Membership would like to thank everyone who has already renewed, and also those who have advised if they are not doing so.  By keeping membership informed you won't keep getting reminders sent out by the Sailing Club Manager system.  If you have any queries about your membership renewal, please contact Judith on membership@papercourt-sc.org.uk as soon as possible.

When you have renewed you will be sent the necessary codes for the clubhouse and gate, and please note that these change on 1st February.
Comms from the Commodore

As mentioned in the last newsletter we have a weed control steering group and here is what they have to report:

The new Weed Control Group have met and agreed new methods of working for this year which will predominately be carried out by a specialist marine contractor.  We will be cutting much earlier and aim to keep on top of the weed and keep our lake clear for training, sailing, sailability, open water swimmers and the anglers who are all adversely affected by excessive weed.

Fraser Hayden, Commodore
Quiz Night - Saturday 24th February - Start Swotting and book your tickets

Booking now open for the next amazing Papercourt Quiz Night.  Come as a team of up to 8, or book individually and we will put you in a clever team, but please book early as this is a catered event.  For those that have not been before our quizzes do not rely heavily either on a knowledge of celebrity culture, or even sailing so everyone will know something!  A great opportunity to socialise and have a posh ploughmans supper, a bit of fun, and of course the bar will be open.  Contact Jenny on snowmail@btinternet.com or on 07752 333486 to book.
Signal from the Sailing Sec

The Icebox series was a real cracker.  44 entrants over the course of 3 days of racing  ... that's three times the number at the advent last year.  As yule expect, there was strong representation from across all fleets, with 9x Optimists, 12x Lasers, 4x RS200 and 16x Solos.

We couldn't believe our mincepies at the surreal spectacle of the  "Santaboat" on Christmas eve, with Santa, Tom Key and his Elf assistant, Peter Howe, playing Christmas carols from the committee boat.  Very welcome and very festive !

With only tree races to count out of 6, it is easy to qualify, so do put this in your diary for next year.

Full results on the website.  Overall winner was Fraser Hayden (Solo), then Mark Carleton (Aero 7), Andrew Boyce (Solo), Leo Yates (Optimist) and Jon Paton (RS200).

Race winners were Fraser, Mark, Andrew and Sam Tozer.
Well done everyone!

Jonathan Otter, Sailing Secretary

What do the Committees do - and what are the Flag Officers for?

Our Sailing Club is a busy and thriving community with outstanding premises and a vibrant sailing community.  Such a club of around 1,000 members does not run itself, and there are about 80 members who sit on various committees deailing with specific aspects of the club, as well as appointees who carry out specific tasks (like your hardworking Newsletter Editor!)   The Chairs of the various committees meet every two months in the Full Commmittee to discuss and agree whatever needs discussing and agreeing.  Overseeing that Full Committee is the Main Committee comprising the Commodore, the Rear and Vice Commodores, the Treasurer, the Secretary, and the Sailing Secretary.  Between them they formulate strategy for the club and look after the various committees.  If you go to this page on the Website, you can see who is who, and if you click on the Flag Officers' Committee Responsibilities you can see who looks after the various aspects of our club.  http://www.papercourt-sc.org.uk/committees/

So what have they been up to lately?

Some upcoming projects that have been agreed and will be put in hand this year include an upgrade for the galley, fencing around the storage containers adjacent to the car park to improve their appearance, and replacement of the boiler together with upgrading some of the radiators.  As well as that the Social Committee are putting together the social programme for the coming year, and the Sailing Secretary and Training Committee are putting together the Summer Sailing programme and the training programme.  Watch this space for further news in future editions.

and the next training opportunities are:

Website Changes including access to Duties
There have been some changes to the menu on the Club’s website to update it, and put some things in a more logical place so they are easier to find.

The Video Gallery has been deleted. Nothing had been posted to it for some years. Some of the videos were no longer available and some were already available elsewhere on the website.  Others relating to specific classes and still considered to be of value have been moved to the relevant class page.

The Environment/External Links page has also been deleted. The links now appear on other relevant pages (most did already) and the environment section has been moved to the About Our Club page.
A new menu, called Boats, has been created and includes the old Supported Classes page as well as the Club Boat Hire and Winter Storage pages that were previously under About Our Club. It also includes a new Chandlery page with a link to Guildford Marine, that was previously on the external links page (who knew that?).

Finally, the Duties page has now been moved under Membership, since one follows on from the other. This puts it in a more prominent position for prospective and new members unfamiliar with the Club. Accessing Sailing Club Manager remains the same, except that you will now go to Membership then Duties.
Spring Work Party Sunday 4th March 9.00am - with Free lunch

The House Committee are already planning what is needed to bring the club up to scratch for the busy Summer ahead.  If you have noticed anything around the club please contact John Panting on house@papercourt-sc.org.uk and let him know so he can add it to the list.  Apart from that please put 4th March into your calendar and come along to help out.  There are indoor jobs, outdoor jobs, mucky jobs, and not so mucky so something for everyone.  We hope that all members will be able to come along and help out and for those that come in the morning, there is a free yummy lunch as well.
