Weekly Marketplace Insights

This past week, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear the case of South Dakota v. Wayfair Inc., paving the way for a pivotal decision in the years-long debate over how to apply sales taxes to online retail activity.

The debate on online taxation and this case between South Dakota v. Wayfair Inc could set a precedent and provide a massive change in the marketplace ecosystem. What legislators are trying to do is force marketplace operators to start collecting sales tax and assist States in ensuring that marketplace sellers are held accountable for sales to customers in their respective States. This is being seen by some as providing a level playing field between these platforms and retailers. I could not disagree more as these measures will impact sellers and not the platforms. The interesting element of this matter is whether the States are going retroactively enforce this change as that could lead to large bills that companies will have to settle. Calling bankruptcy on businesses does not remove these tax payments.

The changes that will happen is that those marketplace sellers that are a large part of marketplaces such as Amazon could disappear and negatively impact selection for customers and revenue generation for the respective marketplaces.

I want to be clear, I am not a tax professional and opinions expressed above are mine. For financial advice please contact your local tax specialist.

Confessions of a retail exec: We use Amazon as a ‘dumping ground’. We made a conscious decision to use Amazon as a dumping ground. We do little
discounting, so the way we get rid of slower-moving inventory that might be discontinued is on Amazon. We get some level of profit. Honestly, the only reason to sell on Amazon is if you’re a commodity or your competitors are on it. Digiday

Online shopping in Africa doesn’t work because of this web form - this is part of the problem but not the problem that African e-commerce faces. It seems to me that most African online shopping stores just xerox existing templates that have worked in developed economies where physical address system is quite organized. They completely neglect the realities of their operating environment where organized neighbourhoods well-labelled streets and addresses are nearly non-existent. Medium

Patanjali’s big online retail move is all about a $6 billion prize.  However, Patanjali lacks the reach of other FMCG majors, especially compared to HUL, India’s largest consumer goods maker. India’s billion-plus population is serviced by over eight million retail outlets scattered across urban and rural India. ITC alone reaches over 4 million of these, while HUL sells through 6.3 million. So e-commerce could help bridge Patanjali’s distribution gaps to a large extent. Quartz

Why a New York Startup Zeroed in on Dallas Shoppers. The conversation started on Instagram in 2016, where influencers who had been sent LIVELY product were posting from Dallas to Denver. How Amazon Could Steal The Mid-Tier Luxury Market.  Amazon could launch vertically integrated, mass-customized brands of its own that use technology to smooth the customer shopping process, similar to Indochino. While Amazon isn’t likely to get catalog coverage from many of the ultra-luxury brands, it does have the ability to make a number of mid-level luxury brands less relevant to large segments of Amazon customers, replacing those brands through the merchandising of its own private-label luxury brands at prices that encourage even the slightly price-sensitive luxury products customer to consider a cheaper alternative, available directly from Amazon. According to Forbes, Boxed is in talks with various retailers for a potential sale. Kroger is supposedly the leading the acquisition talks for a supposed $500 million which is 3x of the capital raised by the startup.

Boxed, I believe will add significant value to any retailer but Kroger has quietly been working hard on their digital business in the last 18 months. They have a large gap between themselves and  Walmart, Target and Wholefoods Market. Boxed provides a wholesale channel that would add a new group of customers to any retailer as they don't have a large selection but rather focus on items that are sold and on data analytics for demand generation. Essentially Boxed can be seen as a digital Costco that caters to a specific niche and whose customers are mobile based. I believe that Boxed has solved logistics and thus any acquiring business gains a technology group that use automation and robotics.
