2018 in Honduras will be a long and violent year.  January 13, and every day, the U.S. and Canadian-backed regime is using extreme, deadly violence against its own people

There was another massive march on Saturday January 13 in Tegucigalpa, protesting the electoral fraud and repression of the U.S. and Canadian-backed government of Honduras.  With over 40 Hondurans killed by the regime since the stolen elections on November 26, 2017, Saturday’s march was also violently repressed by Military Police and Police.

Here: photos and footage from the independent TV station UNETV, posted on Honduras Solidarity Network twitter and facebook accounts: https://www.facebook.com/HondurasSolidarityNetwork/photos/pcb.1493509190704936/1493507894038399/?type=3&theater

According to UNETV and COFADEH there were many injuries, at least 5 people have been admitted to the public hospital.  Journalists from UNETV were attacked, injured and their equipment destroyed, one of them Ronnie Martinez is a newly elected congressman. A sitting congressman Jari Dixon was also beaten.

Do not write your letters of protest to the Honduran government
It is hard to overstate how repressive and corrupt the Honduras regime is.  The “international community” – led by the U.S. and Canada – is directly empowering and continuing with “business as usual” with this illegal, repressive and corrupt regime that is massively opposed by its own people.

Demands - short term
The U.S. and Canadian governments must:
Do an about face, and apologize for their corrupt “legitimization” of the Honduran elections; Condemn the multiple acts of electoral fraud carried out by government of Juan Orlando Hernandez; Condemn the repression (estimated over 40, and counting) against anti-electoral fraud protesters and other citizens; Hold the regime accountable for the electoral fraud and repression; Suspend all economic, military and police related relations with the corrupt government in power;

Demands - medium and longer term
There must be legislative inquiries in the U.S. and Canada into the causes of Honduras’ endemic repression and exploitation, corruption and impunity, with specific focus on the role played by the U.S. and Canadian governments: supporting the 2009 military coup; supporting and legitimizing fraudulent and violent elections in 2009, 2013 and 2017; supporting the expansion of corporate investments in Honduras (mining, garment “sweatshop” industry, bananas, hydro-electric dams, tourism, African palm, etc.), while turning a blind eye to and – in effect – benefitting from repression, fraud, corruption and impunity.
