Whose strength am I working in?
You've heard that old saying, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going."  You might have even taught it to some of you ESL students.  Does that saying apply to us a Christians?  Well, I don't know about you but in the scheme of things I'm pretty weak.  Without the Holy Spirit, I am powerless.  If it were up to me, I'd quit every single time life got hard.  Is life hard for you right now?  Are your student numbers down due to bad weather and illness?  Do you feel like giving up?  Are you thinking that perhaps you weren't called to this after all?

If you are feeling this way and believe me I feel this way too many times, take heart.  We just celebrated a beautiful Christmas Season where the message was loud and clear.  God is with us!!  God is for us!!  Emmanuel!!  Remember God's words to us from Phillipians 1:6:

"And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns." (NLT)

Blessings,
                    Nancy

 Now this is dedication!
- submitted by Bruce Lyman, ESL Trainer

On the first week-end in January, Bruce Lyman (MNA ESL Trainer & CMA Pastor) did an ESL Training in Olmstead Falls, Ohio.  It was very cold that week-end (remember the bomb blizzard) and the heating system broke during the training on Friday night and yet they completed the training, even though the heat was still off all day Saturday. The comments below are from a text Bruce sent me afterwards.  I am sharing this with his permission.

“These brothers and sisters in the battle for the souls of immigrants from all over the world represent a whole new breed of ESL Teacher.

They came from Altoona, PA and Atlanta, GA . . . from Clarkston and Cleveland . . . from Stone Mountain, Parma Heights and Olmstead Falls . . . from PCA and C&MA and NEO House churches.

And where did they come?  To the coldest ESL Teacher Training Workshop ever held . . . in the brutal frozen wastelands with the bleakest  chilliest  classrooms and bathrooms totally devoid of heat . . . where the glorious hot food for breakfast and lunch were the only momentary reprieves from the agonizing arctic temperatures inside the frosty facility we called the training center.

Yes it was extremely challenging and demanding, but these 29 brave new teachers endured what seemed to be hour upon hour of training techniques and idea after idea after idea . . . All designed to make their own churches ESL classes the very best they could be . . . that is should they survive this ordeal???

Was it worth the hand cramps?  Yes!

Was it worth having to  roll up in blankets and wear  hats with ear-muffs in the classroom?  Yes!

Was it worth fighting thru the frigid night shivering in the cold?  You bet!!

Just ask the team from Atlanta who courageously braved the elements to take this new found knowledge back to the refugees who so desperately need what they had learned!

Congratulations to the 29 of the frozen Olmstead Falls . . . you have persevered. . . you have triumphed . . . “ Great is your reward.”

••••••••

Wow!  That all sounds pretty dramatic, but it really was COLD, but no one left . . . no one quit . . . They all survived to tell the tale and to teach ESL another day!!
**
And, no this picture was not taken right before everyone left but on a break.  The furnace died at about 7:30 pm on Fri and was not revived by the end of the Workshop on Sat. at 5:30pm.”

Practical Ideas

It's cold outside!

Most ESL schools, especially those in cold weather states, take a hit in attendance in the winter.  But there are a few things you can do to improve your numbers.

1.    Get back into the habit of praying for your students by name each week (or even daily).  Pray for them to come to class, to be healthy, to keep warm, to have good jobs, for protection for their families, for their salvation.
2.    Contact each of your students.  You may learn that there is a reason they haven’t been in class.  Perhaps they are sick or someone in their family.  Or maybe their car died.  A phone call and a snail mail note can mean the world to them.  It says somebody cares; somebody notices when I’m not there.
3.    Plan something fun for your class. Invite them to a Super Bowl Party at your home.  Design a lesson around the game of football to do in class ahead of time.  An invitation into their teacher’s home is a big deal to them.  Include their whole family in the invitation.
4.    Do another round of advertising like you did at the start of the school year.  Our lesson planning format is designed so that new students can jump in anytime.

And it’s not too soon to think about Valentine’s Day Celebrations.  Go to www.pcamna.org/esl-ministries for Valentine ideas.
