PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Greetings everyone and welcome to the first Newsbrief for 2018

The New Year is charging ahead and I am sure many of you are planning some great trips and getaways for photography in the coming months.  I take off in a few days for the Arctic Circle again where we are conducting yet another wonderful winter workshop chasing the Aurora Borealis.

Much work has been done behind the scenes already to bring you another wonderful convention this year. Our committee along with the invaluable help and planning of the Warrnambool camera club has helped me to organize this important event.

There will be the 2018 registration forms and full programme details on the VAPS website within days. Plan early and think about the great options we have included in this year’s schedule.

Don’t miss any of the three day convention programme, so you can enjoy it to the full.  We have Two Australian and One New Zealand internationally known speakers who will be familiar to many of you. Joshua Holko is our main keynote speaker and will thrill you with tales and experiences from the freezing Polar Regions on both mornings of the convention programme!

His forays into the wild to capture stunning imagery of wildlife and landscape has been documented and shown on TV. Joshua will tell us about his book project and other amazing tales.
Glynn Lavender is a well-known travel and workshop photographer, who specializes in outdoor model shoots with lighting. Glynn will deliver a brilliant presentation along with his stunning images and follow this up with a limited outdoor model workshop with lighting. Bookings are essential and you can do this on the registration form.

We also have Denis smith, who now resides in South Australia. Denis is now known as one of the world’s most prolific light painters and continues to inspire photographers of all ages and experience. His presentation will be amazing and delegates to the convention have a chance to take part in one of his spectacular outdoor workshops at a greatly reduced price. This is strictly limited and you can register on the convention form.

The workshops of both Glynn and Denis are on a first come first serve basis so don’t delay in booking them with your registration form!

Two local speakers will also present and they have some very interesting topics to share with us.
The convention kicks off on Friday night with a wonderful social night and Cocktail party, where hot and cold Canapés and hot drinks are included in the booking and there will be a bar open for those wishing to have a drink or two. This is the chance to look at your leisure, the VAPS interclub entries as they are on display at the event.

It gives us an evening to socialize and catch up with friends too.
We have organized to have lovely morning and afternoon teas on both days and a light delicious lunch on Saturday and a Bar-b-Que lunch on the Sunday which are included in the registration payment.

Warrnambool Camera Club is organizing an outdoor Model shoot for us on Saturday afternoon and they have also secured half price entry for the flagstaff hill Maritime Museum sound and Light show on the Sunday night. Plus, free entry on Monday to Flagstaff hill so you can have the opportunity to shoot people in period costume. I will conduct two dawn shoots on Sunday and Monday, so there is a lot to choose from over the three days for everyone!

There is plenty of accommodation in and around Warrnambool to suit every budget, so book early!

All the best for your plans and may 2018 be another exceptional year for our photography!

Message from the Newsbrief Editor
Hi all

Welcome to a New Year.
Hope you have a good Christmas break and got lots of photography gadgets for presents..

There is always a question for the start of each new year. What motivates or inspires you to take photographs. Competitions, socials, club outings, workshops, tours or just continual improvement.

I myself always get excited and have good intentions for each year, but as it get busier and busier throughout the year its hard to maintain. Another question how do you maintain this?

Good luck for the coming year.

Happy photographing

The first 10,000 photographs are your worst” – Henry Cartier-Bresson

“Photography is a love affair with life.” – Burk Uzzle

“If your pictures aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough.” – Robert Capa

VAPS SERVICE AWARDS AND YEAR BARS

Now is the time for clubs to start thinking about Year Bars and Service Awards and be looking at recognising their member’s efforts where appropriate.

These are presented annually at the VAPS Awards Dinner held with the VAPS Convention.

Year Bars
are important to members.

Starting at 10 years membership and available in 5 year increments, they are recognition of your member’s service and support for your club. They are $12.50 each but some clubs recycle them.

Do you have accurate records of eligible members?? If not you can see who has received what on the VAPS website.  If you spot any errors there, please let the Badges and Awards officer know.

Service Awards

There are two levels of service awards that are available to club members.

Meritorious and State Service SSVAPS awards.

Again these are important levels of recognition for your members’ efforts. Criteria applies to these awards and all information can be found on the VAPS website under Documents, http://www.vaps.org.au.

Clubs should be looking at recognising their member’s efforts where appropriate.

Print Salon 2017
The VIGEX 19th International Print Salon was conducted earlier this year with the judging in May and the public exhibition in July at Cranbourne Gallery, Sacred Heart College. The Committee was pleased to see many Friends of VIGEX at the exhibition or one of the subsequent showings at the Geelong, Corio Bay and Melbourne Camera Clubs. The Salon offered six print-only sections: Monochrome Open, Colour Open, Nature, Creative, Photo Travel and People. The first three of these sections were also available at the Maitland Salon in February and many participants used the ‘send-on’ facility to enter their prints at both salons.

VIGEX 2017 attracted 1,602 prints from 149 authors across 23 countries and the overall acceptance rate was 28.9%. Details of award winners and images of all acceptances are shown in the VIGEX 19th International Print Salon 2017 Gallery on the web-site: www.vigex.org.au

Rising costs and dwindling entry numbers have left many print salons in a parlous financial position and recent VIGEX print salons have experienced significant losses too. Pleasingly the VIGEX 2017 salon has arrested this trend – the number of participating authors was virtually unchanged from 2015 and the anticipated loss has been reduced to just on $1000. The Committee is comfortable with a small loss of this magnitude as it can be covered from the profit on the digital salon in 2016. The outcome has been assisted also by the generous subscriptions from individual and camera club Friends of VIGEX which amounted to $1,995 (25% of total revenue) for the 2017 salon.

Digital Salon 2018
The VIGEX 2nd International Digital Salon will be conducted in 2018, with the closing date for entries on 13 May. There will be six sections: Monochrome Open, Colour Open, Nature, Creative, Photo Travel and Differences in Society. The final section is a new category to encourage innovation in photography – it will seek images that reflect on human life in the modern world. Details of the Salon will be available on the web-site shortly.

Friends of VIGEX Subscriptions 2018-19
Friends of VIGEX subscriptions are used to support each print salon and these funds are not allocated towards the more financially robust digital salons in the alternate years. This means that the next FoV subscriptions will cover the two-year period 2018-19 leading up to the VIGEX 20th Print Salon 2019.

All Friends are invited to renew their subscription now and any new Friends will be especially welcome. Membership Forms for Individual Friends or Camera Club Friends are found on the Friends page of the VIGEX web-site – complete the form electronically for email return or print and post. Subscriptions may be paid using Direct Deposit via EFT.

Preston Photographic Club
The Preston Photographic Club would like to let the Victorian photographic community know that its committee and members have awarded life membership to the Club to the following three recipients:
Arthur Coates
Ian Logan
Ian Millman

Although all three have been financial members of the club for over ten years, this is not the only selection criteria for Life Membership within our Club.

All three have held key positions on the committee for many years; been active in Club activities, outings, trips and workshops; and have guided our Club though many transitions and changes and in doing this have always upheld the integrity of the committee and have striven for the best for the Club and its members.

Arthur Coates who held the position of Treasurer for many years set up a strong system of managing the Club finances and although no longer on the committee still maintains an advisory role.

Ian Logan held the position of competition steward for many years and whilst this position may appear to be easy, it certainly is not. Ian built an excellent rapport with the judges over his time and still serves on the committee.

Ian Millman was President for over seven years and guided the Club through many changes; led the committee with enthusiasm and integrity and is still serving the Club on the committee.
Our Club is small in comparison to most, but we are competitive and passionate and it’s people like Arthur, Ian and Ian who have laid a strong foundation for the Club’s future and helped create the friendly Club that we are today.

The committee and membership are sincerely grateful to our three recipients for all that they have achieved, and we are proud to bestow on them Life Membership of the Preston Photographic Club.
