EIB-GDN | NEXT BATCH OF FELLOWS

The Global Development Network (GDN) and the European Investment Bank (EIB) are selecting a second batch of ten fellows to study the impact of EIB projects in African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries. The first batch of fellows have begun their training and mentorship with a kick-off at EIB headquarters in Luxembourg, and are currently working under the guidance of top international experts to evaluate projects financed under the Bank’s Impact Financing Envelope. The joint EIB-GDN program builds skills and capacity in impact assessment for local researchers. Learn more

GDN & KNOWLEDGE FOR DEVELOPMENT

GDN has published a new booklet, chronicling it’s contribution to a buoyant knowledge-for-development agenda since 1999. In his introduction, Pierre Jacquet, President of the Global Development Network, outlines four complementary contributions: informing local development policy, strengthening regional research centers, amplifying the voice of developing country researchers in global debates, as well as nurturing local talent to support the emergence of a research and evidence-based policy culture. CLIMATE CHANGE RESEARCH IN DHAKA

GDN attended the 4th Annual Gobeshona Conference for Research on Climate Change, in Dhaka, Bangladesh, a climate change hotspot. The Gobeshona knowledge-sharing model is gaining international recognition for connecting climate change research with policy. Its conference gathered 50 research centers working on climate change adaptation in Bangladesh, where GDN presented its work on climate adaptation in least developed countries, emphasizing the capacity building of research institutions to help them conduct quality research on climate change. IMPROVING URBAN CLIMATE

GDN believes that improving urban climate requires more data and urgency.  In a recent article published on The WRI Ross Center's blog, The City Fix, Arianna Flores Corral makes the case that climate change looks grim for cities, unless researchers, academics, policy and decision makers can join efforts to build more sustainable and resilient cities. She also outlines progress made on including more data for resilience at the #COP23. Read the full article.

GDN ARCHIVES | FLAT TAX & INEQUITY

In Albania, the informal sector, while sizable and crucial to the economy, has not been formally analyzed in depth. On the one hand, it contributes to providing many individuals with employment alternatives. On the other, it can increase vulnerability by keeping people out of the social security system. The study applies a micro-simulation model that allows counting for both formal and informal employment, to investigate the implications of a flat-tax regime on informal employment.
