Message from the President
2018 is a landmark year in the history of our organisation and we celebrate our international leadership of the engineering profession over the past 50 years.

We are looking forward to seeing our members, our colleagues from international NGOS involved in science and engineering and the UNESCO ambassadors at the 50th anniversary Symposium and social event at UNESCO headquarters in Paris on 7th March 2018.
This will be the first of many celebrations around the world and will be part of a busy week consisting of WFEO Board and Committee meetings, a strategic planning workshop and a celebration for International Women’s Day.

We are also looking forward to celebratory events hosted by our national and international members, this will raise the profile of engineering and demonstrate the important work that engineers are engaged in every day.

Dr. Marlene Kanga

The WFEO Sponsorship Prospectus
The WFEO Sponsorship Prospectus

WFEO is developing a plan to progress the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through engineering.

The organisation needs the support of sponsors to complete this work. A sponsorship brochure has been developed and can be downloaded from the link below. We request our members and friends to engage with industry to develop corporate support for the organisation.

Global SDG 7 Conference on Energy
Global SDG 7 Conference
In recognition of the fundamental role of sustainable energy in achieving almost all of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), from the eradication of poverty through advancements in health, education, water supply and industrialization, to combating climate change, a global preparatory meeting in support of the review of SDG7 at the 2018 UN High-level Political Forum will be held from 21-23 February 2018 in Bangkok, UN ESCAP.

This Global SDG7 Conference will bring together key stakeholders from Governments, UN system and other international organizations, the private sector, and civil society to engage in a dialogue that emphasized the integrated and cross-cutting nature of sustainable energy and its multiple roles in supporting the achievement of the SDGs.

Eng. Pradeep Chaturvedi, Vice Chairman of the WFEO Standing Technical Committee on Energy, will attend the conference.

8th World Water Forum 2018
8th World Water Forum 2018
The 8th World Water Forum (WWF8), which is the world’s biggest water-related event, will take place in Brasilia, Brazil, on 18-23 March 2018.

The main theme of this 8th edition will be “Sharing Water”.

Therefore, it focuses on the issues related to the sharing of water benefits, encouraging the exchange of solutions and good practices and, in a wider context, the cooperation between countries and institutions as to the various aspects that compose the world water agenda.

The themes and topics selected for this Forum edition are intimately related to the SDGs of the 2030 Agenda:
  1. Climate – Water security and climate change
  2. People – Water, sanitation and health
  3. Development – Water for sustainable development
  4. Urban – Integrated urban water and waste management
  5. Ecosystems – Water quality, ecosystem livelihoods and biodiversity
  6. Finance – Financing for water security
WFEO Associate CONFEA, is involved in the sixth theme “Finance – Financing for water security”

The WFEO Standing Committee on Women in Engineering (WIE) is focused on three themes:
  • Engineering Workforce Diversity,
  • Leadership and Empowerment and
  • Engineering Strategic Indicators.

The theme of Strategic Engineering Indicators has been challenging in that data on women in engineering is scarce in many parts of the world. Having more data can help us provide guidance to WFEO member societies and organizations like UNESCO on both where and what interventions are needed to increase the number of females in engineering globally.

In this context, the Society of Women Engineers (SWE, part of WFEO member American Association of Engineering Societies AAES), in partnership with University of California Hastings College of the Law (UCHCL), is conducting a survey of professional engineers in India about their experiences in the workplace.

This survey, which takes take approximately 15 minutes to complete, is designed to understand the workplace experiences of currently or recently employed engineers. The goal of this survey is to identify factors that are negatively impacting the workplace culture and climate, with the goal of informing employer efforts to improve the retention of engineering professionals.

Please share the survey with those you know working in engineering in India. Please encourage both male and female engineers to take this survey. We will share the survey results during the next WIE meeting in London in October to help advance our WIE committee work.

Peter Greenwood ends his long-standing commitment to WFEO
Executive Vice President, Dr. Peter Greenwood ended his long-standing commitment to WFEO at the end of the General Assembly in Rome in December 2017.

His contribution to many of WFEO’s committees was continuous and significant.

WFEO President Marlene Kanga is happy to pass on his remarks:

“I have met and worked closely with many wonderful people over the nearly 14 years I have been associated with WFEO.

I’ve worked with different cultures before, but the number and richness within WFEO has been welcoming and stimulating.
The potential of the Federation and its importance to its members, the engineering profession generally, and to key international agencies, was almost overwhelming at times.

I will miss the comradeship, the giving and receiving of help from each other in meeting WFEO’s challenges. Keep up the good work of serving our WFEO constituency.

Peter Greenwood”
