Open Meeting - 15 February
We have our next open meeting on Thursday 15 February at the Richmond Building, University of Portsmouth.
No doubt you are aware of Portsmouth City Council’s plans to improve the road network around the city centre. We put a small team together to review the small mountain of documents in the planning application.
Although the plan makes many claims about improving cycling, much of it does not comply with government standards. We asked for a number of improvements to make it safer and more convenient.
We’ll be talking about the road scheme and our assessment of it at the meeting.
The meeting will take place on Thursday 15 February at 7.00pm in Lecture Theatre 2 of the Richmond Building of the University of Portsmouth.
We start at 7.00pm, so please arrive 10-15 minutes earlier.

Portsmouth Cycle Forum: Success!
Last summer several of our committee members took Councillor Simon Bosher, in charge of transport, on a ‘Tour de Portsmouth’. Cycling along Marketway they pointed out two lampposts causing obstruction near the blind bend.
He agreed they were a hazard and finally they have been removed!

Eastern Road
After the tragic death of cyclist Tim Atkins last year, there have been remedial works on the Eastern Road. Up to now this has meant cutting back the hedge on the corner by the Harvester to improve visibility. Portsmouth City Council will be making further alterations to the junction overnight from 1st February.
The information we have is that they will be bringing the kerbline out to slow down vehicles turning into or out of the Harvester, and to move the path for cyclists closer to the corner. During the works the path will still be open for pedestrians, but cyclists will need to get off and push for a short distance. As it is intended to be overnight work we hope there is little inconvenience, but please let us know if this is not the case.

Flood Defences
The work to renew Portsea Island’s flood defences continues. As a Cycle Forum we’re doing what we can to make sure the needs of cyclists are met. Any member of the public can comment, so it is important that individual cyclists like you respond, not just groups like Portsmouth Cycle Forum.
We’re trying to get some of the team behind the scheme to talk at a future meeting, but in the meantime you can talk to them at these public events:
- Canoe Lake Tennis Pavilion: 23 February, 1pm-7pm and 24 February, 11am-4pm
- Fratton Community Centre: 28 February, 1pm-7pm
- Royal Naval Club & Royal Albert Yacht Club: 1 March, 1pm-7pm
- Cosham Community Centre: 6 March, 3pm-7pm
- Eastney Community Centre: 7 March, 1pm-7pm
- Aspex Gallery: 9 March, 1pm-7pm
- St Jude’s Church: 14 March, 1pm-7pm

Meetings Coming Up
Our next meetings are on Thursday 15 March and Thursday 26 April.
Thursday 15 March is our Annual General Meeting. This is member only, so make sure your membership is up to date! If you aren’t a member you can join before, or even on the night.
As usual, we’ll be holding elections for our committee. We need a minimum of 10 members, but we’d like to involve more people of all backgrounds.

Thursday 26 April is our election hustings. This is shortly before the local elections and we’ll be inviting all local parties to send a representative to talk about their transport policies and plans for improving the city.
