When it comes to your food safety plan and FSMA compliance, if you aren't looking forward and moving ahead you are falling behind.  Understanding what activities qualify as continuous improvement is critical to compliance and ensuring your organization is ready for audits and inspections.

The FSMA Round Table Series provides local food and beverage manufacturers with s forum to discuss continuous improvement strategies.  This is the first of an ongoing series where industry members will have an opportunity to share best practices and strategies with their peers.  Topics will include:

  • Corrective Actions
  • Training
  • Internal Audits
Robin FitzClemmon from Hummingbird Wholesale will be leading our first session and sharing some of the strategies that Hummingbird Wholesale is leveraging.

Opportunity Share Your Story

The Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce is conducting interviews to better understand how the organization can best serve local industry.  As part of their greater Business Retention and Expansion Program (BR&E), the Chamber is collecting information privately and aggregating the results to tell the narrative of the industry and inform the work of economic development agencies across Lane County.

This is your chance to ensure that the Eugene Chamber and partner agencies are working to serve your needs!

These narratives help The Eugene Chamber of Commerce work with the city and county to improve policies/programs that affect our local industries.  For example, there is one component of the survey that addresses the permitting concerns of the industry.

For more information and to book your interview, contact Joshua Mongé at joshuam@eugenechamber.com

Eugene FSMA Training:  Preventative Controls

Tue 4/24 - Thur 4/26, Location: TBA

On September 17, 2015, the FDA published final rules for Preventive Controls for Human Food. According to Part 117.180(c)(1) of the regulation, every food manufacturing facility covered by this regulation will need to have a “Preventative Controls Qualified Individual”(PCQI). This specialized training course will focus on the FSMA rules and because of its complex nature, will need to be attended by those who have a working understanding of the HACCP method.

The PCQI must conduct certain activities related to the Food Safety Plan (including development and preparation of the Food Safety Plan, validation of the preventive controls, records review, and reanalysis of the Food Safety Plan). Successful completion of this course is one way to meet the requirements for a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual. This course is the standardized curriculum recognized by FDA.

This 2.5-day course will be led by Dr. Richard Dougherty.  Dr. Dougherty has completed the Lead Instructor Training for FSPCA Preventive Controls for Human Food.

Each attendee will receive a training manual and a certificate issued by the Association of Food and Drug Officials (AFDO).

Find more information and register by 4/20 here.

Global Ice Cream Market to Reach $78.8 Billion by 2025

Lane County is home to some of the biggest names in ice cream (both dairy and non-dairy).  Growing demand for premium frozen desserts will surely help the continued growth of Oregon Ice Cream, Lochmead Dairy, Coconut Bliss, and So Delicious.

The global ice cream market is anticipated to reach USD $78.8 billion by 2025, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 4.1%, according to a new report from Grand View Research Inc. The growing demand for premium products, especially in developed regions such as North America and Europe, is expected to drive the ice creams sales in these regions.
