The Lake Level Monitoring Project is designed to help us better understand how the quantity of water in lakes is changing.

Can Citizen Scientists Provide Accurate Data?

Lake guage at Catfish Lake, Croatan National Forest
By Grant Parkins and Sarah Yelton
A question that often arises within the research world is whether you can get accurate data from people who are not trained as scientists, sometimes known as citizen scientists. To answer this question in the context of our project, we developed a way to test the accuracy of each lake height measurement submitted by citizen scientists and found very interesting results.
By the Numbers: We are monitoring 12 lakes using 15 gauges. To date, 76 citizen scientists have submitted 710 lake height measurements.
