WASHINGTON WILD NEWS

PNAHA WA State Female Dev. Camp Recap

We saw a great two days of fast hockey and competitive play at Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett as Washington State female hockey players attended the 2018 PNAHA Washington State Female Development Camp.

Two special guests spoke to the camp participants before the first ice session:

Shawna Davidson, a member of the USA Hockey National Team in the inaugural IIHF Women’s World Championships in 1990, as well as in 1992 and 1994. A former assistant coach at University of Minnesota - Duluth (three NCAA Frozen Four Championship titles), she currently serves as Director at Large with the USA Hockey Adult Council, and head coach of the US women’s ice sledge hockey team.

Emily West, the USA Hockey ADM Director for female hockey, is a two-time captain of the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers women’s hockey team and a Patty Kazmaier Award nominee in 2010. West helped the Gophers win two conference titles and an NCAA Division I national championship in 2012, finishing her playing career with 158 points.

With over 51 female players from all over Washington State ages 14 to 17 years old, six women coaching, and two females refereeing the scrimmages, the event represented a great day all around for female hockey!

Players will be evaluated and possibly chosen to attend the USA Hockey Multi-District Camp in Colorado Springs, CO in June, 2018--a precursor to the USA Hockey National Camp.

Executive Director Harris Honored by AHCA

The American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) -- the national organizing body of American  college, professional, junior, high school, and youth hockey coaches -- announced its major awards for 2018. Eight individuals who have made unique contributions to amateur hockey in the United States will be recognized either at a luncheon during the Frozen Four in St. Paul or during the 2018 AHCA Convention in Naples, Florida.

THE JOE BURKE AWARD is presented annually to the person who has given outstanding contribution, support, and dedication to women's ice hockey. It is named in honor of a girls' and women's hockey "superfan," Joe Burke.

Congratulations to WWFHA’s very own executive director of operations, Zoë M. Harris, as the 2018 Recipient of the Joe Burke Award for her myriad contributions to American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Women's Hockey, University of Washington men's hockey, and the Western Washington Female Hockey Association!

For the last 30 years Zoë M. Harris has been growing female hockey across the country as a player, coach, and administrator. A native of Barrington, Rhode Island, Harris graduated from the University of Maine (1992) with a degree in Mass Communications, where she played for the women's non-varsity ice hockey team for four years and served as a team captain and club president.

Wild Stick Drive

WWFHA needs more hockey sticks to support the Girls’ Try Hockey for Free sessions and the Learn to Play program – especially in the smaller sizes. Please consider donating a new or used stick that is 4’5” to 5’5” in length.

Give sticks to Jim Ericson, Equipment Manager, at Highland Ice Arena on Fridays (5pm-7pm), Saturdays (12pm-2pm), or Sundays (9am-12pm). Look for the stick bucket in the small rink alcove if he is on the ice.

How Do I Avoid Getting the Cold/Flu While Playing Hockey?

As WWFHA’s 14UAA Rep team manager Amy O'Neill says, "Do not share water bottles! Properly clean water bottles and equipment after each use to avoid spreading illness among the team."

USA Hockey also shares the following tips:
  • Avoid contact with anyone sick
  • Quarantine those with flu symptoms
  • Avoid touching your eyes nose and mouth
  • Frequently wash your hands with soap and water or alcohol-based sanitizer
  • Use individual water bottles
  • Don’t try to ‘play through it’
  • See your doctor

What Should I Say to My Athlete After a Game?

From the Changing the Game Project at ChangingTheGameProject.com

Communication issues are one of the biggest factors that negatively affect performance. By asking your athletes these 5 questions, you will have a far greater understanding of why they play and what they need from the adults (parents and coaches) who are guiding them along their sports journey. Enjoy some quality time with your athletes, and have them write down the answers to these questions. You never know what you will learn.

Five Questions to Help Improve Your Athlete’s Playing Environment:

1. Are you enjoying yourself? (First and foremost, this answer must be YES)

2. What do the coaches/parents/other adults do that makes sports more enjoyable for you? What do the coaches/parents/other adults do that makes sports more stressful and less enjoyable?

3. How would you like me to cheer for you during games/matches? Should I say nothing, cheer positively, cheer equally for everyone, etc.?

4. During the car ride home after the game, do you like to talk about the game, or would you rather wait till later or the next day?

5. What other sports do you want to play?

College Deferred?
Next Steps You Should Take

From WWFHA's college admissions advisor, Kiersten Murphy of Murphy College Consultants: If you have been deferred to the regular decision admission pool by one of your early action or early decision colleges, there are a few things that you can do:
  • Continue to work hard the next few weeks to ensure that your first semester grades are worth bragging about.
  • Be sure to ask your guidance counselor to send the college your first semester grades as soon as they become available. You can also ask your counselor if they would write a note to support your application, especially if it your first choice school.
  • Reach out to the college admission counselor who is responsible for Washington State. Relay any new accomplishments (academic or athletic) and reiterate your strong interest in the school. Make sure that you write the letter, not your parents.
  • Carefully consider the rest of your college choices to ensure that you will have options come April. Put as much work into these applications as you did into the very first. And make sure you would love to go to these choices.
  • Do not feel deflated! I often believe that if a college can't see your potential, then you aren't meant to be there. Don't let a less than positive decision make you feel sad about all the hard work you have put into your high school and hockey careers.
