Hello Liberated Genius Family!

Thank you to all who made it out for the St. Louis Women's March on Saturday. It was great to hear the phenomenal speakers and see all of you supporting the cause with boldness. I had the privilege of walking behind and supporting two of our little geniuses, Mia Coleman-Hawkins and Lauryn Donovan, who were the youngest speakers. They were AMAZING! Check out my reflections of the magical event in my latest blog, and these inspiring videos and photos from the event.

New Studies Find that Positive Feelings About Blackness Improve Academic Performance for Black Girls,
Based off the work of Sheretta Butler-Barnes, a professor at Washington University in St. Louis. “We found that feeling positive about being Black, and feeling support and belonging at school, may be especially important for African-American girls’ classroom engagement and curiosity,” Butler-Barnes added. “Feeling connected to the school may also work together with racial identity attitudes to improve academic outcomes.”

The Games Black Girls Play, by Dr. Kyra Gaunt
The research from this video was taken from her book, The Games Black Girls Play which illustrates how Black girl games are black musical styles are incorporated into the earliest games African American girls learn—how, in effect, these games contain the DNA of black music. Drawing on interviews, recordings of hand-clapping games, cheers and her own observation and memories of game-playing, Kyra D. Gaunt argues that black girls' games are connected to long traditions of African and African American music-making, and teach vital musical and social lessons that are carried into adulthood. In this celebration of playground poetry and childhood choreography, she uncovers the surprisingly rich contributions of girls’ play to black popular culture.
