Exhibits Opening: Curators' Closet and New Acquisitions
Step into the catacombs of the Pratt Museum! Curators’ Closet invites past and present curators of the Pratt Museum to share some of their favorite artifacts from collections. Join us for the opening on Friday, February 2, from 5-7pm. This retrospective exhibit highlights items in storage that visitors may not see often, gives some insight into the role and nature of the Museum’s collections, and invites visitors to think about what they value as individuals and, collectively, as a community.
Sharing the opening reception with Curators' Closet is a second exhibit: New Acquisitions. This exhibit is made up of artifacts and art new to the collections, and will be on display in the downstairs art gallery. New Acquisitions will also be debuting on Friday, February 2.
Curators' Closet is part of an epic year of programming celebrating 50 years in this building. Stay tuned for a schedule of community conversations, workshops, a call for art, and curricula in local K-12 schools!

History as it Happens
When you think of Homer History, what comes to mind? Is it coal trains along the Spit? Homesteading? The 1964 earthquake? Or do you think of oil spill clean-up actions? Annexation? The recent Recall? Women's Marches? All of these things are important earmarks on contemporary Kachemak Bay History.
Collecting History as it happens is not a new trend in museology, or even at the Pratt. Think of how quick our response was to the 1989 Exxon Oil Spill! However, collecting contemporary moments in history has re-emerged on the forefront of museum practice over the last decade, reflecting an increasingly fast-paced age of instant information that our communities and constituents live in."Everything you do today will be history by tomorrow! Even things that people of the past found commonplace are interesting, important, and inspiring to us today," (Ohiohistory.org). You may have even seen mention of this kind of collecting in the New York Times: "'Any moment when America is debating its identity, it’s crucial to collect it,'" (quoted in the New York Times).
We want to hear from YOU about what should be considered from the last few years of local Kachemak Bay events—what should we be actively collecting for Museum archives?? Watch for updates on this subject, and other ways you can help contribute to Museum Collections!
