This weekly update provides a look at flu activity in Delaware County. While seasonal flu viruses can be detected year-round in the United States, flu viruses are most common during the fall and winter. The exact timing and duration of flu seasons can vary, but flu activity typically peaks between December and February, although activity can last as late as May.

County Surveillance

Flu activity is likely to continue for several more weeks. CDC is reporting 30 pediatric deaths due to flu nationally. In past seasons, between 80% - 85% of flu-associated pediatric deaths occurred in children who had not gotten a flu vaccine that season. Vaccination for all persons 6 months of age and older is recommended. Flu vaccination can not only help keep you from getting sick, but it also reduces the severity and the risk of hospitalization if you were to get sick with the flu. In addition to protecting yourself, vaccination helps protect those around you, including those that are more vulnerable to severe flu illness such as babies, young children, older people and people with certain chronic health conditions.
