We value the relationships that we develop and have with our children, parents and colleagues and we will be nurturing and growing these relationships over the first term.

EQ THEME
New beginnings

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE TURTLE CLASS INFO BELOW IS UNDER SEA HORSE. THIS STILL NEEDS TO BE CHANGED AND WILL BE DONE BY SOONEST.

Hope that you all had a super weekend.
This is the third newsletter for the year.

We are currently setting up a WATER CRISIS PLAN:
1. For immediate and general water saving.
2. For if and when municipal water is cut off.
More details to follow.

Please note that newsletters will be emailed to you via mailchimp every Monday. If you do not receive one, please let Jane know and she will correct your email address on the system. If she does not have your email address or it changes, please make sure to let her know too. If both parents would like to receive an email please let Jane know so that she can upload both email addresses, alternatively if you need to receive your letter in hard copy this can be arranged via your child’s message pocket.

Please read these Monday Newsletters each week as IMPORTANT and all relevant information about the school, your children's classroom activities and the functions at the school will be written in it.

MORNING CARE (7am-8am)
We have now started week three and therefore you will have noticed a few changes in the morning with regards to who is on duty from 7am -8am.
We have two assistant teachers, Saadiqah and Rudo on duty each morning from 7am and 7.30am respectively as well as Andre from 7am and a teacher from 7am. Please note that the teacher changes each day and the morning story is read in each teacher’s class room so that will also change each day.
Here is a list of which day each teacher open.
Monday: Colleen Van Eyk
Tuesday: Elraine Fredricks
Wednesday: Linda MetCalf
Thursday: Dee Hilton
Friday: Paula Wickham
If you arrive with your child between 7am and 8am, please come straight into the morning care room where the teachers on duty will greet you. You can then go to your child’s classroom through the inter-leading doors and they can unpack their bags. Please then leave them with the teachers in morning care where they can busy themselves with activities before morning story at 7.45am.
The doors to the classrooms on the veranda will be opened just before 8am each morning.
The Rainbow and Turtle children can go straight to their classroom from 7am to be greeted by their teachers, either around the outside or through the morning care room.

PEASE READ AND RETURN THE PARENTAL CONCENT FORM TO THE OFFICE, AS WELL AS THE FEE COMMITMENT FORM!

If anyone has an old bar fridge that they can sell to us we would be most appreciative.

A complete year planner will be emailed to you next week and some will be stuck up around the school so that you have an idea of all our activities and functions for 2018. These events will be explained in the weekly newsletter as they come up.

Extra murals start this week. Please let your child’s teacher know if your child will be doing or trying out an extra mural.
Please contact the coaches directly if you would like your child to attend any of them. Their numbers are on the notice board.
Please check lost property every day. The box is outside the Angelfish Classroom.

SCHOOL FEES

Please note that January School Fees are due and must be paid as soon as possible. Statements have been sent to you via email or placed in your child’s message pockets each month.

Please chat to your child's teacher if you would like to be a class rep or help to liaise with the parents in the class when we need help or assistance during functions.

GATE SECURITY SYSTEM

For your child’s safety, please note that we have a gate security system. It involves a fingerprint entrance device and we ask each new parent to please have their fingerprint registered into the system, as well as any grandparents who frequently fetch the children. You need to do this with Jane in the office. Jane has a control device, to let in visitors.
Please use the bell, a button on the left hand side, in the little box at the gate if you have not registered your fingerprint yet. Cards will be issued to those whose fingerprints do not register properly.
PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU CLOSE BOTH GATES WHEN ENTERING AND LEAVING THE SCHOOL FOR THE SAFETY OF YOUR CHILDREN!
PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DO NOT THINK IT RUDE IF YOU CLOSE THE GATE IMMEDIATELY BEHIND YOU EVEN IF ANOTHER PARENT IS APPROACHING!!!!!!! YOU ARE BEING RESPONSIBLE AND CARE ABOUT THE SAFETY OF OUR CHILDREN.

SANDWICHES FOR A FRIEND EVERY WEDNESDAY

Donations to Rainbow Preschool
Each week we collect fruit and sandwiches and take them to Rainbow Preschool to distribute among the children there. We will take the food to them on a Wednesday morning.
Rainbow Preschool is an Educare Center in Masiphumelele with about 80 children ranging from 3 to 6 years old. We have developed a relationship with them and help them with their educational program, stationery and toys and the up keep of their building and garden.
Please bring an extra fruit or sandwich and put it in the Mandela box, situated at the door, outside the office, on a Wednesday morning.
Anyone wishing to come with me to look at the school and become more involved in this initiative is welcome to come and chat to me.
Thank you!

TURTLE CLASS
Hi Moms and dads
Hope you are well and in high spirits that your children are setting in so well.
Theme of the week:

Could you please send a photo of your child to school.
Thank you for your support.

EQ: Doing Something brave
GENERAL: My feelings and emotions
MATHS: Sorting and matching according to colour, size and number
          Position In/out
We are delighted at how quickly the children have settled in and that they are enthusiastic about learning and are participating eagerly in all lessons.  All Grade R children need to be registered with the department of education and in order to do this we need a copy of their ID. If you bring in the original we can make a copy at school. The children need to be registered by next Wednesday 31 January 2018.
PLEASE NOTE we follow the curriculum provided by the Department of Education. Our hours are different to the rest of the school and are from 8 am to 1 pm. We start with about 10 minutes of brain gym.  This helps to calm the children, develop concentration and large motor co-ordination.  We then focus on mathematics and language skills. Children who arrive late are missing out on learning important concepts required for Grade 1. If you are late please do not let your child walk in alone bring them to the Shark Class.
Last week we did our first maths and language rotation and we are so happy with the way in which the children have coped with setting out and packing away the tables. They are also learning to work independently in a group and are using their own initiative to resolve problems. This week we will continue to discuss the importance of working together as a group. Taking turns, sharing, being helpful and kind. We will talk about being brave and what has been a challenge in the Shark class or in the garden. We will think of ways to resolve challenges.
This week we start learning the alphabet. I use the Letterland story but do not focus on the character as children learn that A is for Annie Apple and when shown the letter call it Annie Apple not the sound "a". They are taught the name and the sound A for apron, April and apricot but a for ant, apple, axe, acrobat. Children are encouraged to bring objects or to draw pictures or cut out pictures of objects that begin with 'a'. This is a great opportunity for you to spend time with your child looking for pictures or objects or drawing objects. It is a very good way to extend your child’s vocabulary so I urge you to help your child with this activity.
In maths we will continue counting and learning to write and identify the numbers from 1-10. We will sort and classify objects according to shape, size and colour and compare the various sets.
Applications for Grade 1 are open at the various schools in the Valley so please apply now for your child to attend Grade 1 in 2018.
IMPORTANT DATES TO DIARISE:
·         Saturday 10 Feb Shark Class Picnic 10 am – 12 pm. Please bring a blanket/ picnic mat and your own food and drinks. We picnic in the Fairy Garden and on the grass so if you have an umbrella please bring it for extra shade.  This is a great opportunity for you to meet the children and parents in the class.
·         Tuesday 20 February AGM and Meet the teacher. Please try and attend this event. After the AGM you will come to our class where I will explain the Grade R programme and routine. Please note the event is in the evening and children do not attend.
·         Thursday 22 Feb OUTING TO EDUEXCELLENCE. Eduexcellence a school in Noordhoek opposite the new Sunvalley Checkers Mall has invited us to a Teddy Bear’s Picnic on Thursday 22 Feb. I will need help with transport so if you are able to assist please let me know.  All children have to wear safety belts and are not allowed to sit on the front seat. Please fill in the indemnity form and return it to me.
·         Saturday 24 February Mini Walk – The first fund raiser and an event that the children love. The whole family can participate and walk. After the walk there will be various games that the children can do eg fishing, treasure hunt, face painting etc. Food and drinks will be sold. I will need help to run our stall but will discuss this at the AGM.
Extra mural activities start next week. Please let us know if your child will be participating in any of the extra murals.
Please sign and return the blue forms as soon as possible.
We look forward to seeing you at the various events.
Thank you

EQ:  Making someone feel welcome
IQ:  Feelings, Emotions, Manners and How to treat our friends
Focus:  Fine motor skills:  Draw-a-man, Pencil grip and control, cutting skills
Number Concepts:  Introducing Number 1, Recognising Number 1
The children are settling nicely and getting to know their new routine and boundaries.  It is normal if your child still feels a little anxious or tearful on arrival in the morning.  Once the day begins they soon become so involved with their peers, then their anxiety subsides.
Please remember to check your child's pocket and our class notice board regularly and write in our "Message Book" if we need to know something.  Please remember to fill in the Extra Mural and Allergy list notice, along with the WhatsApp Group form.  This past week we have had demos of all the Extra Murals, which the children loved.
Kindly complete our Facebook Indemnity ASAP so I can begin to upload photo's on our Closed Group.  I have taken photos of the children doing the demo's and enjoying their days as school.
For the next two weeks we will be learning about "Feelings, Emotions, Manners and How to treat our friends" along with "Making someone feel welcome".  Please encourage your children to bring story books about our theme and if they are suitable I may read them at story time.
We will be focussing on "Fine Motor Skills" over the next two weeks.  We will be looking at Pencil grips and control, Draw-a-man and cuttings skills.  Please encourage your child to use the correct pencil grip when drawing and correct them continuously.  Also encourage them to add colour and details to drawings.  When using a pair of scissors, encourage them to place their Thumb in the top and two fingers in the bottom hole for more stability.  Encourage them to do little activities like pegging your washing or folding your socks to strengthen these small muscles.  Another fun activity is to scrunch paper between thumb and pointer finger and then get them to flick the little ball, once placed on the table.  You can make this a little competition.  These activities help to strengthen their fingers for writing and cutting.
Please encourage your child to UNPACK their own bag on arrival in the mornings, so they KNOW where their lunch box is.  Thank you!
We will be having our "Starfish and Angelfish" class family picnic on Saturday 3 February from 12pm to 2pm, here at school.  Please see our notice board for details.  Look forward to seeing you all there.
Dates to Diarise:
3 February - Starfish class picnic 12 - 2pm

16 February - Movie Night/Babysitting at school 6 - 11pm

Hello parents.
Hope you had a great weekend.
Our theme this week is 'Who am I'. We will help children develop self-knowledge, appreciate themselves and understand that they are unique and love themselves and also know in which way they are similar to others.
Can you please bring their photos for a 'show and tell' on Wednesday and we will display it in class till the end of the year. If you have any theme related books or items they are always welcome.
On Saturday the 10th of February we are going to have a class picnic together with the Turtle class at 9-11am at School. It is also a way to build relationships with parents and children. The whole family is most welcome. Please make an effort to be there and bring your picnic blanket and basket of goodies.
On the 20th of February at 6pm will be the Annual General Meeting (AGM ) and Class discussions. Please diarise these important dates.
Please remember to apply sun cream in the morning and pop in the bag for those children who stay for aftercare. Also remember a sunhat and spare and please ensure that they are clearly marked with your child's name.
Morning snack should consist of healthy food which includes a fruit and a bottle of water.  NO sweets, chips, chocolates, sweet biscuits etc. (We only allow these when we have birthdays, picnics and parties).
Have a lovely week.

SPARE CLOTHES
Please remember to pack in some spare clothes for your child each day, particularly the younger ones. The children often need to change for various reasons and it becomes a little tricky when there is nothing for them to wear!!!
FACEBOOK
We love sharing pictures from the school day. Teachers only put photos up on Facebook once a week. Any parent who does not want their child’s photos to appear on Facebook should let their teacher know. www.facebook.com/fhpps.

And on that note...

When you take the time to genuinely listen to your kid’s, kiss them good night, and set firm but gentle limits, you can be sure they will benefit from your attempts at being a good parent.
Regards, Paula
