Since 1977 Harbec has been  a recognized leader in providing innovative, full-service, cost-effective solutions to its valued customers. As the final portion of the 4 part history of Harbec, we want to share some from our most recent endeavors and accomplishments. These bring us into our current capabilities and goals moving forward. A brief summary of how the last 10 years will bring Harbec and its customers into the future is below, please read the full BLOG to learn more.
  • Advanced additive manufacturing technical abilities
    • belief that additive is only part of the answer and that its combination with precision subtractive CNC machining offers the best total solution, is resonating with their customers
    • the ability and equipment to offer this new path to their toolmakers and as they develop the training opportunities and methods, they will eventually become one of the first ‘manufacturers of the future’
  • Significant benefits of 4 and 5 axis CNC machines
    • complex parts like turbine blades, pump impellers and other parts that require simultaneous multi-axis cutter paths
    • ability to machine a part from multiple sides, therefore requiring many less setups, which offer improved precision overall
    • replace 3 axis CNC machines with 4 and 5 axis mills and lathes
  • Molding department has also made great strides
    • increased utilization of automation to improve quality and reliability, to reduce waste and improve efficiencies
    • cleanroom capabilities have helped Harbec to become a certified medical molder
    • developments in transfer molding
    • management of materials and waste
  • Continued to progress in the area of sustainable manufacturing
    • attained carbon neutrality, which means that the component parts that they make have no carbon footprint
    • developing a set of metrics that will allow Harbec to share with any existing or potential customer, the amount of carbon that they reduced from their company’s footprint by buying HARBEC parts
  • Improvement in the area of sustainable energy
    • completion of their CHP upgrade
    • allowed them to double their thermal energy potential
    • estimate that this will improve their energy BTU efficiencies to over 80% compared to the average for utility power which is only of 25 to 35% efficient
Harbec’s owner, Bob Bechtold concludes: “The past 40 years have been a great and rewarding experience for me. While they sometimes held challenges and difficulties, they more than equally offered amazing rewards and good fortune. In my life I have been blessed by always knowing what I wanted to be when I grew up and have had the opportunities to pursue that dream. These forty years of progress are due to all the people who have contributed in so many ways, for which I’m eternally grateful. My final challenge is to find a successor who understands what HARBEC is really all about, someone who will use the direction and momentum they have accomplished and take the wheel to drive it even farther into the future.”

Updated ISO 50001 standard tackles energy, emissions

ISO 50001, the standard for businesses that have improved their energy performance, is getting a facelift — and machinery users will need to be aware of the changes in the next few months to ensure compliance.

The standard established by ISO is in the process of being updated and “will include a number of improvements compared to the 2011 version,” said Deann Desai, who is the convener for the group making the updates...

...Ontario, N.Y.-based plastics processor Harbec Inc. is one example of an ISO 50001 success story. The company’s implementation of an energy-management system (EnMS) that met the requirements of ISO 50001 resulted in a 16.5 percent improvement in its energy performance (see related story on Page 14) over a threeyear period. Harbec spent $127,000 to implement the system, but the company has been saving an average of $52,000 a year on its energy costs, so the EnMS paid for itself in a mere 2.4 years.

The energy savings earned the facility certification as a platinum-level partner in the Department’s of Energy’s Superior Energy Performance (SEP) program. The program provides key recognition for organizations that want to show their energy-performance improvement. Information on SEP can be found at www.energy.gov/eere/amo/superior-energy-performance. SEP facilities have met the ISO 50001 standard and have improved their energy performance anywhere from 5 percent to 30 percent in a three-year period.

To achieve SEP, a facility has to implement an EnMS that meets the ISO 50001 standard and demonstrate improved energy performance. An independent third party audits each facility to verify achievements and qualify the unit at the silver, gold or platinum level, based on energy-performance improvement.

Today, energy resources at Harbec’s facility are managed through a business system to sustain those savings and continue to strengthen energy performance in the future.

The U.S. provides strong support for businesses’ efforts to improve their energy savings, Desai said. The Department of Energy offers tools to help with the EnMS implementation process, such as the 50001 Ready Navigator, which can be accessed at https://energy.gov/eere/amo/50001-ready-program. It provides a series of tasks to complete, and then explains how to improve and measure energy performance. Participation in the program is free.

Harbec's president gave a talk recently at the Rochester Museum and Science Center. This lecture is part of a a 10-lecture series of topics relating to Alternative Energy and Fluid Mixing. The lectures are co-sponsored by the National Science Foundation, University of Rochester Center for Energy and Environment, and Mothers Out Front. "Bob told the inspiring and extraordinary story of how he achieved carbon and water neutrality AND saved money in the process, for his plastics manufacturing company, Harbec "

What can we do on a daily basis to help mitigate the effects of climate change?

Mothers Out Front member Neely Kelley was also interviewed by local news person Evan Dawson. The show Previewing the New York Climate Solutions Summit  is from October but still has some great info including reference to Harbec (you'll see the "listen" button next to the title). They start talking about Harbec right around around 32:40.

Molder Harbec places true value on energy efficiency

Energy efficiency is a core value for custom injection molder Harbec.

The company has achieved platinum certification from the Department of Energy’s Superior Energy Performance (SEP) program, the government’s top recognition of an organization’s energy performance. To receive that certification, companies must implement an energy-management system that complies with the ISO 50001 standard, and reach an improvement in energy performance of at least 15 percent in a three-year period. Harbec realized overall savings of 16.5 percent, reducing Btu consumption by 6 million and annual energy costs by $52,000.
