Give Me Space

  I’m back after a week’s hiatus. As you might already know, last week I moved flat, so spent last Monday - when this newsletter should have gone out - lugging boxes… fun! 

Now I’m safely moved in but am still internet-less, so baby steps. Weeks living in chaos, though, inspired the theme of this week’s newsletter: personal space. 

While this could be all about how I really hate people getting too close or touching me and how I’m a firm believer that we should all stay within our own boundaries, it’s not (I’ll save that for another newsletter). Instead, I want to talk about how having some personal space within your home is important to help you create. 

I am very much a homebody, I own this t-shirt for God’s sake.  As I’ve got older and more settled in my living arrangements I’ve realised how important my personal space is. In my old flat I carved out a sewing space within the corner of my living room which, while small, was mine in which to create. When it was messy nothing got done but when it was tidy (which was admittedly quite rare) I felt inspired to get shit done and essentially just make a mess of that tidiness. 



Over time what I have found is that it’s all well and good searching Pinterest for inspiration pictures or buying pretty fabric and patterns, but not having the space means often these dreams can never become a reality. I know, it’s a first world problem, but this was put into perspective when mine was taken away - I haven’t made anything in months. 

In my new flat I’m lucky we have somewhere that now has a spare room, so in that I have put my sewing desk and created my own space that inspires me to create. Already I want to come home after work and use this space to finish projects, create mood boards or even write this newsletter. 

Finding space can be hard. I, like most other millennials, am still renting (apparently only because spend too much money on coffee every month) but I do believe that no matter how small your space, it is important to have a creative corner. Somewhere you know is yours to do whatever craft, hobby, or activity brings you joy. As an avid watcher of George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces, what I’ve learnt is that anything is possible no matter how small the space. Getting it organised might take some creative thinking but it will be worth it in the end. 

Moving into February I want to find my creativity again and I’m hoping my space will allow me to do this.
