Friends of Waterbury Reservoir

January 2018
Winter on the Reservoir

It has been a wild weather ride. It looks like the frozen reservoir saw a lot of rain and rose several feet, then froze again. Then the water went down, leaving an ice sheet around the perimeter. This doesn't appear to deter the ice fishing, as several shanties may be seen off the Blush Hill launch in this photo from the Day Use Area in Waterbury Center.

If you are one of the generous donors who contributed in the past six weeks - thank you! Your contribution helps us to continue our mission to protect, enhance and improve the Waterbury Reservoir to benefit everyone who uses it.

As we look to expand our activities this coming season, we hope you will join us as a volunteer or as a contributor. Some ideas are below and more will come as the ice thaws. Enjoy the rest of the winter season and the super blue moon/eclipse on 1/31! The reservoir will be a great place to see it.

Best,
John

We are excited - and proud - to earn the support of the Lintilhac Foundation! Their grant will support expanding our Greeter Program to protect the reservoir from invasive species and put FWRes on firm financial footing going into the future.

It is heart-warming to welcome a new partner who shares our goals. We appreciate the faith they have invested in the work we do to preserve and enhance our beautiful reservoir.

Access Update

Green Mountain Power is fixing up the access areas at the Dam Launch, Blush Hill and Cottonbrook. They just got an extension for completing Cottonbrook because they need a couple more permits. All three areas are due to be finished by 12/31/2019, but GMP hopes to have them finished by fall of 2018.

What's the Problem?

In talking with the Watershed Management Division, it comes to light that there are resources available to protect, and even enhance, the reservoir. What are the issues you see in the area that affect the reservoir? Is it stream bank erosion in the Thatcher Brook? Knotweed at Cottonbrook? Something else?
You are the eyes. We need to hear about what you see.

Greeters is Growing!

FWRes created a Boat Greeter Program two years ago with a lofty goal - keep invasive species out of our reservoir! It had a humble beginning with one paid, part-time staffer and one volunteer at one access point one busy weekend day a week.

This year we are expanding with the goal of staffing up to three access points one or perhaps two weekend days a week.

Join the adventure! We will give you training and a partner to make it easy to talk with boaters about keeping our reservoir clean.

It is up to us to advocate for this precious resource. Let us know if you're interested in learning more!
Supporting the work of the Friends of Waterbury Reservoir (FWRes) is as simple as telling people about it. You are a member if you say you are a member!
It costs $250 a month for our basic needs and more to support our outreach efforts. We need and appreciate any financial support you can offer.
We are dedicated to expanding our efforts to stop the spread of invasive species, and to educate people for the safety and enjoyment of everyone. Help to preserve the Waterbury Reservoir for YOU and for future generations.
Your paid membership provides the tools to do the work.
