ASVO Mildura Seminar 25-26th July 2018

Every year, attendees tell us the investment in the mid-year seminar in Mildura is worth it because it takes people out of their regions and into ‘neutral ground’. However, we also understand that if you travel from more ‘remote’ regions, getting to Mildura is a bigger investment.

Granite Belt, Margaret River and Tasmania - ASVO is coming to you in July!

The mid-year ASVO seminar will still be held in Mildura but using ‘Zoom’ technology, the entire proceedings will be live-streamed to smaller, more intimate gatherings in these three regions. ASVO members will host the remote seminars and attendees will interact with the presenters and each other both during the event and in the evening at a local dinner.

This year the seminar program presents the hot topic, ‘Front-line pest and disease management for healthy vineyards’, offering expert presentations and real case studies from producers to maximise the impact of control efforts and managing vineyard pests and diseases.
Key speakers include;
  • Ollie Powrie who will share his success at Villa Maria in New Zealand with non-chemical Botrytis management
  • Andy Clarke from Yering Station describing life living with phylloxera.
  • Dr Cath Kidman from Treasury Wine Estates with her insights on clonal selection for vineyard longevity.
  • ASVO is also ‘Zooming in’ Vaughn Bell from New Zealand to provide updates from his team on virus management and...
  • Jim Pekin from Queensland. Jim will share his learnings from the banana industry after recent significant outbreaks of Panama and Banana Freckle diseases and ways the wine industry can learn from their experiences.
Attendees will also hear about the latest technologies, including variable rate sprayers, drones and smartphone apps being used to identify and manage pests and diseases.
“Each season presents different challenges across our winegrowing regions. Pest and disease management is a priority area to examine and redefine best management practices” Mardi Longbottom, Chair of the Program Committee.”

Don't miss Mildura keynote speaker Ollie Powrie

Ollie Powrie joined Villa Maria Estate as the Company Viticulturist in 2007. He oversees fruit supply from over 2000 hectares of producing vineyards in Marlborough, Nelson, Waipara, Martinborough, Hawkes Bay, Gisborne and Auckland, and for every new vintage there is a lot to organise.

Based in the Hawkes Bay, Ollie heads a team of Regional Viticulturists, Vineyard Managers and Grower Liaison Officers throughout the country.
“When I first started with Villa Maria, I was astonished at the diversity and quality of vineyard sites both owned and leased by the company. Now, 10 vintages on, I know the vineyards well and still feel excited every day I visit them”

Introducing Board Member Chris Brodie

Chris Brodie started his career in New Zealand, after graduating with a Bachelor of Horticulture from Massey University in 1988, before joining the Wingara Wine Group in 1997.
Chris is now Katnook's Senior Viticulturist and oversees integrated viticultural management systems which take into account the four key elements for optimal grape quality: water, plant nutrition, pest and disease control and sunlight.
Since arriving at Katnook Estate, Chris has worked at improving his knowledge of wine and winemaking, as well as developing his palate. This has helped him understand the importance of the vineyard in crafting great wines but, obviously, is enjoyable in its own right.

Chris has been a member of the ASVO since he attended an ASVO seminar in Mildura on his first day of work in Australia. He has gained much from the Australian wine community and is still impressed by how open and willing people are to contributing to industry forums, particularly Associations and Societies. He sees his role as an ASVO Director is to reach out to the wine community and encourage research and innovation. He strongly believes that ASVO Seminars, the Journal, and involvement in the AWITC are great forums for disseminating information and fostering industry engagement.

As a Director of the ASVO, Chris hopes to contribute back to the wine community, encourage others to get involved, and to encourage research innovation that can be easily adopted by growers and winemakers. He is aware that there is a large part of the community who tend to miss out on extension and networking opportunities and he wants to make it worthwhile and easy for employers to include those that might be missing out.

Chris says he is impressed by the willingness of wine grape growers to innovate and “have a go” at something well before it is validated by detailed trial work. This willingness keeps those involved ahead of the game and maintains a freshness and zest to keep open going in tough times. Harnessing that spirit into continually improving what the ASVO offers is a good goal for us to aim for.
Chris is proud to have lived in Australia for 20 years and have become a proud citizen, he also revealed that he maintains a one-sided support for the All Blacks, and hopes that this doesn’t disqualify him from holding any sort of public office.

Feature Section: Smoke Taint in Wine

Understanding smoke taint

Associate Professor Kerry Wilkinson, University of Adelaide, School of Agriculture, Food and Wine

During 2017, significant fires occurred in or near wine regions in the US, Canada, New Zealand and Chile, resulting in vineyard exposure to smoke, and in some instances, heat and/or fire damage to vines. Australian wine regions have largely avoided smoke or fire damage thus far this vintage, albeit recent fires in South Australia and New South Wales may have affected some grape and wine producers. Nevertheless, with the 2018 vintage underway, it seems appropriate to review the key findings from smoke taint research.

Volatile compounds present in smoke can be taken up by grapevine leaves and fruit, and depending on the timing and duration of smoke exposure, can taint wine (Kennison et al. 2009, 2011). Several volatile phenols, including guaiacol, 4-methylguaiacol, cresols and syringol, can be measured in wine, as markers of smoke taint (Hayasaka et al. 2010, Hayasaka et al. 2013). However, grapevines accumulate smoke derived volatile phenols in glycoconjugate forms, i.e. with one or more sugar molecules attached (Hayasaka et al. 2010, Dungey et al. 2011), which complicates detection of smoke taint in grapes. Hydrolysis of glycoconjugates during fermentation can release the volatile phenols into wine (Kennison et al. 2008), but a significant pool of volatile phenol glycoconjugates remains in wine (Ristic et al. 2016), even after extended bottle aging (Ristic et al. 2017).

Analytical methods which measure volatile phenol glycoconjugates have been developed to facilitate detection of smoke tainted grapes (Dungey et al. 2011, Hayasaka et al 2013). Alternatively, grapes can be harvested early, fermented and the resulting wine analysed for evidence of smoke taint; i.e. chemically to determine volatile phenol levels or by sensory analysis. Fruit maturity has been shown to influence the perception of smoke taint in wine (Ristic et al. 2015); volatile phenols have also been identified in fruit of some red grape varieties, Shiraz in particular; i.e. as natural grape constituents (Ristic et al. 2016).

To date, the most successful methods of removing smoke derived volatile phenols from tainted wine involve the addition of activated carbon (Fudge et al. 2012) or reverse osmosis and solid phase adsorption (Fudge et al. 2011). In both cases, amelioration reduced the intensity of smoke-related sensory attributes, but glycoconjugates remained in the treated wines, and may therefore continue to impart ashy palate characters (Mayr et al. 2014). Reduced skin contact time during fermentation also reduces the intensity of smoke taint in wine (Ristic et al. 2011), but isn’t practical for all wine styles.

Ongoing research aims to understand the enzymes involves in glycosylation of smoke derived volatile phenols, to evaluate the capacity for foliar sprays to provide a physical barrier against smoke exposure, and to develop new analytical methods for detecting and quantifying smoke taint in grapes and wine.
