Troy Talk brings you all the latest news and views from Troy...

With 2018 in full flow, the winter moving swiftly towards spring, already we have been busy with the ground preparation that's needed to implement our plans for the year ahead.

Rather than leaving 2017 behind, we're continuing to focus, safeguard and nurture our simple yet effective business principles so we can build on our past successes.  AND just one month in, here's a glimpse of some of the exciting things that have been happening!
Troy Attend Employment Oscars...
On Thursday the 25th of January, staff members from 'Team Troy' headed up to London for the Employment Engagement Awards held at, the spectacular, Wembley Stadium. The glitzy ceremony was attended by a variety of well established, national and international companies including Marks & Spencer, Royal Bank of Scotland and Nissan, to name a few.
Troy were nominated in the SME category (small medium enterprises) of which 9 companies were entered.  Unfortunately, we didn’t scoop the award for ‘Employee Engagement SME Company of the Year’ on the night, which went to the Lawn Tennis Association (LTS), who were very worthy winners,  However, the team had a great time regardless and were proud to be representing the company at such a brilliant event, which recognises the great lengths many businesses go to in looking after their hard working employees.
New Premises For Recoil To Facilitate New Company Growth...
Arconic, the organisation which owns the Recoil brand, has recently doubled the size of its’ Telford operations turning it into a 100,000 sq ft business.  As well as Recoil, Arconic’s other brands include Huck, Marson, Camloc, SNEP and Simmonds.  This expansion is due to rapid growth across Arconic’s brands and in a variety of markets, with turnover expanding by about 45 per cent over the last two years.

A new “Shuttle” has been installed in the new premises which will house the Recoil stock in Telford, making picking and preparing shipments a much more streamline process.  The move into the second premises was partly an act of opportunism, said operations director Jonathan Craven, but it coincided with the company needing additional space to grow into.  "It felt like too good an opportunity to miss and it feels like we will be vindicated in this because it has come alongside growth in the business”.

Arconic employs about 130 people in Telford, and expects to be able to grow that number as it beds in its new building and continues the expansion of the business.  "We are in a position where the market has taken well to the new products we have and not only do we want the investment in manufacturing equipment, we know that is going to require people," Mr Craven added.

Makita's New LS1019 260mm Slide Compound Mitre Saw Replaces Industry Standard...
  • 1,510 W motor – maximum 3,200 rpm
  • Mitre range 60° to 60° left/right; bevel range 48° to 48° left/right
  • Rigid slide rails allow forward-only movement
The current generation of wood machinists, carpenters, fixing carpenters and structural timber installers has recognised the Makita LS1016 260mm slide compound mitre saw as the benchmark by which all other machines have been compared.  Now, the new Makita LS1019 will establish an even higher level of technical attributes and reliable performance.  This new 260mm slide compound mitre saw is powered by a 1,510w motor which will run the blade up to 3,200rpm maximum.

Amongst the many new features on this leading mitre saw is the design of sliding head layout.  The twin slide rails are set at an angle in the rigid aluminium alloy chassis frame, while the rear chassis fixing is positioned right at the rear of the saw assembly so that the machine can be placed close to a bench wall.  The robust rails allow the saw head to move forward to cover the total sawing zone without the wasted movement of the motor head passing back behind the sawing zone.

The robust aluminium alloy main bed is fully machined for accuracy giving a large turning base.  The rear fence has adjustable material locks and side holders for wider pieces of material.  The new Makita LS1019 has class leading mitre and bevel capacities – 60° L to 60° R mitre, and 48° L to 48° R bevel.  A front knob enables easy bevel adjustment with easy-to-operate mitre angle lock and one-touch sliding head lock.  The cutting performance also sets high standards:  at straight cut the Makita LS1019 will cut 91mm deep across a 279mm width whilst with a 45° L or R mitre angle and 45° L bevel angle the maximum is 58mm x 197mm.
The electronic controls feature soft start for machine and operator safety; constant speed control; electronic brake; double insulation and a laser marker system on the LS1019L model.  110v and 240v versions of this new mitre saw are available.  In addition, a cordless 36v version, the Makita DLS5110, is ideal for major on-site operations and includes all the core features available on the mains LS1019 model.

New Regional Sales Manager At DART Tool Group...
A very welcome addition to the DART Team is a new Regional Sales Manager for the South East region. Adie Walker has been in the industry for more than twenty years with a varied and rich background across numerous roles.

Adie worked in Harrison & Clough many years ago as a Regional Sales Manager then after a few years moved on to Milwaukee Power Tools, which provided him great exposure to the power tools industry and confirmed his ongoing love for ‘big boys toys’ as he calls them!

Then he moved in to a role as General Manager in Invicta Tools, which involved working on the other side of the counter and within a merchants – in this time, he helped to build their sales team and project managed an extension for their warehouse – giving him great insights of the industry. Then latterly he worked for Folkstone Fixings as Sales Manager and building their sales team, managing trade shows, doing branch management and again building their warehouse capabilities.

However, Adie says on his new position in DART ‘I love being this side of the industry - selling in to the merchant trade. It’s a real awakening for me to come back to it now – it’s where my passion lies. To be out on the road, selling products I love, for a company with such a great ethos is a fantastic opportunity’.

When asked what attracted him to DART he says ‘I had followed the DART brand for the last ten years and could see they were a company that were going in the right direction – they are constantly moving forward and it’s obvious that they are always innovating. The new DART brand particularly caught my eye’

Adie certainly has plenty of energy and describes himself as optimistic, enthusiastic and happy.  His plan for his new role is to hit the ground running, with plans to visit the customers in his area as soon as possible – especially dormant accounts, as he sees immense potential in the region.
What’s more, Adie has a poignant personal achievement that not many of us can claim – he saved a person’s life! A family member had a motorbike accident while on holiday in Bali and needed to be urgently flown back to the UK. Adie rapidly raised funds within the community to get him flown back by air ambulance, and on transition had to make a life or death decision when he took a turn for the worse in transition – of whether to continue with the flight or to land – both with unknown prospects. Thankfully to all – Adie made the decision that saved his life – so amongst his wealth of experience is excellent decision making!

In Adie’s free time, he enjoys a daily early morning walk with his dog, enjoys a spot of fishing and is a bit of a thrill seeker, with having braved bungee jumping, sky diving and paragliding.

For all those that meet Adie, it won’t come as a surprise that his personal mantra is ‘Stand Tall, Be Proud and Stay Strong’. DART is certainly very excited to have him on board and with his extensive knowledge of the industry, he will be a great help to his customers.
