President Howerton to Speak at Emerging Issues Forum

NCACC President and Durham County Commissioner Brenda Howerton will join a distinguished panel of speakers at the 2018 Emerging Issues Forum. She will discuss her work as co-chair of the Institute for Emerging Issues’ Blue Ribbon Commission on Local Financing Options for Early Childhood Development, and her presidential initiative, “100 Counties: Helping Our Children Thrive.” President Howerton will help kick off the two-day event, which will be held February 5-6 at the Raleigh Convention Center and Hunt Library at NC State Centennial Campus. Click here for more information and to view the agenda.

Governor Appoints Commissioner Ronnie Smith to NC Works Commission

On January 12, Governor Roy Cooper appointed NCACC Second Vice President and Martin County Commissioner, Ronnie Smith to the NC Works Commission. The NC Works Commission is the state’s designated Workforce Development Board. It is tasked with making recommendations on policies and strategies to enable the state’s workforce and businesses to compete in the global economy. Click here to view the announcement.

Johnston County Commissioner Ted Godwin Featured on In Focus with Loretta Boniti

Commissioner Ted Godwin of Johnston County was featured on the Spectrum News program, In Focus, with Senator Harry Brown and Representative Jason Saine. The show, which is hosted by Loretta Boniti, aired Sunday, January 28th, and it will be available online. The interview discussed economic development and the use of incentives.  

Kevin Leonard on Carolina Newsmakers

Discounts for NARCAN available through U.S. Communities Purchasing Cooperative

This month, NACo featured an article, which discusses a new partnership between the U.S. Communities Government Purchasing Alliance, Premier, Inc. and Adapt Pharma to offer the first and only FDA-approved potentially lifesaving opioid withdrawal medication, NARCAN Nasal Spray. According to the article the ready-to-use nasal spray version of naloxone hydrochloride “has become a staple for medical professionals, fire and police departments and even librarians since it does not require assembly or priming to use.” For more information about how to take advantage of the discounted program, which reduces costs by 40% for entities that serve the public, click here or call 877-981-3312.

DHHS Official Dave Richard to Brief NCACC Board of Directors on Medicaid Transformation

Dave Richard, Deputy Secretary for Medical Assistance of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, will attend the upcoming NCACC Board of Directors meeting in February as a guest speaker.  He will discuss North Carolina’s Medicaid Transformation, in which the program design for Medicaid and NC Health Choice will transition from fee-for-service to managed care.  Richard leads North Carolina’s $14 billion Medicaid and NC Health Choice programs for DHHS.

NCACC Thrive Regional Child Welfare Meeting Rescheduled

The eastern NCACC Thrive Regional Child Welfare meeting, originally scheduled for January 17 has been rescheduled to February 28, 2018 from 10 a.m. - 2:45 p.m. The meeting location has also changed. It will be held at the East Carolina Agricultural & Education Center on 1175 Kingsboro Road in Rocky Mount. Registrants who are unable to attend the new meeting time will receive a refund for their registration fee.

NCDOT to Hold Summit on Statewide Strategic Plan

North Carolina’s Department of Transportation invites elected officials, managers, planners and citizens to participate in the March 21, 2018 Strategic Plan Summit from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Raleigh Convention Center. At the Summit, NCDOT will review the strategic plan which focuses on strategies for improved transit connections. Summit participants will discuss the proposed Transit Action Plan to help NCDOT, local governments and transit providers build the partnerships necessary for successful implementation. Click here to register online.
