Lifelong Learning Is Our Journey

WISE … Once a Secret … Now a Gift

By Pat Hurton, Chairman of the Outreach Committee

Do you drive a car? The Outreach Committee members have designed auto decals for you, our members, as gifts for your active membership in WISE. In addition, we hope that when you put them on the windows of your car, you will increase the visibility of WISE. Imagine how great it will be to see several hundred WISE auto decals in Worcester and suburbs and hopefully have many people asking, “What is WISE?" We plan to distribute WISE decals at our Spring classes. However, if you would like additional decals or do not have one, please contact Pat Hurton at pjhurton@yahoo.com or the WISE office at wise@assumption.edu or 508-767-7513.  Thank you for being outstanding WISE ambassadors.
Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty.
Anyone who keeps learning stays young.

Events of Interest at Assumption

The following events are free of charge. They are sponsored by the programs in Global Studies, Latin American Studies, Women’s Studies, and Community Service Learning. The Assumption community invites attendees to share their thoughts about these events afterwards!
Monday, February 26, 7pm, Kennedy 112
Toilet: A Love Story (India, 2017), Part One (81 min) and Part Two (80 min), comedy, directed by Shree Narayan Singh, in English and Hindi.
Tuesday, February 27, 7pm, Kennedy 112
Toilet: A Love Story (India, 2017), Part Two only (80 min)

Note: Due to the length of this Bollywood movie, which is designed with an intermission break, it will be shown in two screenings. On the first night, the entire film will be shown. There will be the option to leave at the intermission, at the end of Part One (81 min) or to stay for the entire film (161 min). After a brief introduction recapping the plot of Part One, the second day’s screening will be only of Part Two.

Based on a true story, a progressive young Indian woman threatens to divorce her husband when she discovers his house does not have a toilet. It is filled with songs and fun—a wedding and Holi color festivals—as well as some serious depictions of village councils, government bureaucracy, and non-violent community organizing by women.
Tuesday, March 13, 7pm, Kennedy 112
Awake, A Dream from Standing Rock (USA, 2017), documentary, directed by Myron Dewey, James Spione and Josh Fox

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe captured world attention through their peaceful resistance in 2017.  Awake, A Dream from Standing Rock, captures the story of Native-led defiance that changed how we fight for clean water, our environment and the future of our planet.
Saturday, March 17, 7:30pm, Curtis Performance Hall in Tsotsis.
A special concert features New York Metropolitan Opera Tenor Matthew Polenzani. Tickets are $50 each. Proceeds will benefit the purchase of a Steinway concert grand piano for the Curtis Performance Hall.
Monday, April 9, 7pm,  Curtis Performance Hall in Tsotsis
Gulistan: Land of Roses (Canada, 2016), documentary, directed by Zayne Akyol.

Note: The director will be available for questions at the presentation.

The mission of these female fighters is to defend Kurdish territory in Iraq and Syria, and defeat ISIS, while embodying a revolutionary ideal advocating female empowerment. Offering a window into this largely unknown world, Gulîstan, Land of Roses exposes the hidden face of this war: the feminist face of a revolutionary group united by a common vision of freedom.
In addition, these two free lectures may be of interest to the WISE members.
