to dive into your increasing depths

My word for 2018 is "Intention"

This word is proving to be a bit more difficult than words I've had in the past.  I use my word of the year as a touchstone - I come back to it when I need direction or decision-making help.  But the word Intention doesn't set direction like past words have done. When I need to make a decision or set a direction, and I come back to Intention, it asks me a question in return: "What is your intention here?"

Let me give you an example.  In this glamorous life of professional coach and yoga teacher, I sometimes have free time on my hands.  My local yoga studio (the beautiful Bodhi Tree) needed some extra help this winter, and I was asked if I would work at the front desk.  I was excited to be asked, and happy to spend more time at the studio, but before I committed, I needed to know if this was the best use of my time.  I checked in with my word for the year, and Intention immediately asked, "Well, what is your Intention with this?".  It required me to think more deeply about my motivation.  Was I saying yes because I wanted to spend time with the cool kids, or was there another factor?

I decided that contributing to the running of the yoga studio meets my goals of being more involved with the yoga community and spending time doing things that inspire me.  But you see how the word Intention asks me to do more work?

My word last year was Believe. That was simple.  Anytime I checked in with it, it just told me to Believe.  Intention asks me to go deeper, and that's fitting for where I find myself in 2018.

You can use the word Intention to help you focus on what's truly important to you too.  It's a great way to get to the core of your motivation and help you find a clearer direction and focus.  If you're interested in focusing on your intentions, ask me about my Intention Sessions - focused one-hour coaching sessions where you'll make progress on meeting your intentions.

Inspirations and Influencers

Meditation: I started meditating about a year ago.  At first I was skeptical.  I couldn't get my mind to stop churning around and I didn't see the benefits.  Then I learned some meditation techniques in a mediation class, and I had an ah-ha moment.  Meditation is a practice.  it's not the kind of thing that you perfect, it's the kind of thing that you just keep practicing.  I started devoting 15-20 minutes every morning to this practice, and that's when I started to understand how it can help calm the mind and tame the thoughts.

Lisa Larter: I started following Lisa Larter on social media a few months ago.  She's a business coach who keeps it simple and down to earth.  She's created some successful businesses so she knows what she's talking about, and she's not afraid to share the lessons she's learned from her own failures.  I just started reading her book, "Pilot to Profit" and it's giving me all kinds of ideas for my own business.  Inspiration is always a good thing!

Local inspiration:  I've had the opportunity to host some job search events at Resource YYC recently.  This is a co-working space in downtown Calgary, with beautiful 20th-floor views to the south.  The staff there are so friendly and helpful, and they have a variety of spaces for small companies to rent, as well as the beautiful boardroom where I do my workshops.  Resource YYC gives me the feeling of community that I've come to expect in Calgary.

Edmonton Friends - Volunteer Opportunity for You!
