Welcome to our January Newsletter

And welcome to 2018, Year of Young People. We have had a great response since launching our CSGN Young Person Travel Grant, thank you to all who have helped by sharing this with their own networks. We are looking forward to reading through the proposals and helping up to three young people to visit some truly fascinating and inspiring projects. 

We are close to announcing the 2018 CSGN Forum programme and opening registration for the event. As subscribers, you will be amongst the first to hear - so keep an eye on your inbox for further details and how to book your place.

GIS vacancy
This position offers a great opportunity for an enthusiastic, proactive individual who is currently seeking to enhance their GIS experience and level of responsibility within a wide-ranging remit. 

This is a permanent position based in CSGNT's HQ near Shotts, Lanarkshire. Some travel mainly within central Scotland will be required.

CSGN Forum and grant
Preparations for the 2018 CSGN Forum are progressing well, and we look forward to sharing the programme and opening registration for the event shortly. These events have sold out in the past, so we would advise booking early. It also means you have a better chance of securing your preferred workshop or site visit choice.

CSGN Young Persons Travel Grant 2018
CSGNT Head of Strategic Development
Central Scotland Green Network Trust (CSGNT) has launched its inaugural Travel Grant to fund three young people to visit anywhere in the world to learn more about green infrastructure projects like The High Line in New York, Gardens by the Bay in Singapore and the Bosco Verticale in Milan, and to bring the knowledge back to the Central Belt.

Marking Year of Young People 2018, the grant is open to young people under the age of 26 and up to three successful applicants will each be awarded up to £1,000 (£500 if visiting an initiative in the UK) for a trip during 2018.

ELGT Welcomes New Chair of Board
ELGT Board Chair
ELGT has welcomed their new chair, Dr Kate Broughton. Dr Broughton’s experience includes the private, public and third sectors. She has been a member of the Scottish Natural Heritage Board since April 2016, and sits on its Audit and Risk Committee. 

Dr Broughton replaces Carol Cawood who stepped down as chair in December 2017 following ten years in the role.

Future Routes Fund
Young people engaging with nature projects
The deadline is approaching for SNH and Young Scot’s £20,000 Future Routes Fund, available to groups of young people and individuals from across Scotland aged 11-26 who have an idea which will promote Scotland’s stunning nature and wildlife.

The events and projects need to take place in the Year of Young People 2018 but can take any form. They could involve film, music, talks, art, outdoor recreation, volunteering, or learning. They need to encourage young people’s interest in the nature and biodiversity that can be found across Scotland.

SNH and Young Scot will help young people to develop their idea for an event or project, so applicants don’t need a detailed plan to apply. Deadline for grants of £500 to £5,000 is 15 February 2018.

Spaces for Change Fund Open to Young People
Projects for young people
Spaces for Change (S4C) is a UK wide programme that will find, fund, support and connect young people aged 16-24 to start and run social ventures that unlock the potential of unused or under-utilised spaces for the benefit of the local community, especially other young people.

From 2016-2019 100 awards will be available for young leaders consisting of up to £5,000 project funding, a dedicated award manager providing tailored support, cohort support, and peer to peer networking opportunities for sharing knowledge and learning.

Deadline for EOI is 27 March 2018.

Glasgow Airport FlightPath Fund
The Glasgow Airport FlightPath Fund focuses its community investment in several areas including education, the environment, economic regeneration and employment.

The FlightPath Fund is designed to ensure the communities surrounding the airport share in its success - community groups and charities in Renfrewshire, Glasgow and East and West Dunbartonshire are all eligible to apply for funding.

Before making a formal grant application, it is advised to email a summary of your proposal to your local community fund representative so that they can give guidance.

Green roof guide
An online guide to creating small scale green roofs is available online. This guide builds on the original downloadable pdf – The DIY Guide to Green and Living Roofs.

The guide has been updated with new elements with more sketches and now multi-media input such as videos. Including step-by-step instructions, the guide shows you how to build a green roof on a shed, an extension or a new build.

Welsh Government Consult on SUDS Regulations
SUDS
The Welsh Government is consulting on proposed regulations for SUDS in new developments.

Recognising the multiple benefits for water quality, flood risk reduction, amenity, well-being and biodiversity, the government’s statement also reflects on findings from a research study indicating the lower capital costs compared to traditional piped drainage systems.

The government aims to introduce the legislation into the Welsh Assembly in May 2018.

Benefits of Meeting UK Active Travel Targets
Walking and cycling targets
Sustrans has released a first of its kind model to measure air quality benefits from both reducing motor emissions due to shifting to walking or cycling, and the changes in personal exposure to air pollution.

Findings show that more than 12,000 premature deaths from air pollution would be prevented over ten years, if both England and Scotland reached their respective official goals to get more people to walk and cycle.

In addition, there would be £9.31 billion worth of benefits to the economy over the same time period.

New Edition of Low Carbon Neighbourhood Planning

The new and updated edition of the Centre for Sustainable Energy’s Low Carbon Neighbourhood Planning guidebook is out now.

The guide was developed to help community groups develop a positive and ambitious neighbourhood plan.

The guide includes sections on flooding from extreme weather and green infrastructure and biodiversity.

Mainstreaming Biodiversity Targets for the Private Sector
Walking and cycling targets
Engaging the private sector regarding biodiversity remains challenging, with businesses unsure about what actions they can and should take in managing impacts and dependencies on biodiversity and ecosystems. The University of Oxford and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee, with the support of the Valuing Nature Programme, are undertaking a project to address this issue.

They see the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals as a potential catalyst to drive private sector action on biodiversity.  The project will produce a series of easy to access briefing notes to support the private sector in contributing to international strategic goals to conserve biodiversity and demonstrate alignment between these and the SDGs.

Experts are being asked to highlight case studies demonstrating how business of all sizes are taking action regarding biodiversity.

Take Part in the Power of Food Festival
The Power of Food Festival
The fourth edition of The Power of Food Festival will take place on 16 - 17 June 2018 across Edinburgh. Registration is open for community food gardens and external contributors wanting to take part in the festival.

Activities such as an open day, community day of action, community BBQ or picnic are being encouraged, as well as activities organised by external contributors.

Deadline for registration is Saturday 31 March.
